Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

In our Moon camp, we wanted to be as functional as possible and as comfortable as possible for the astronauts and researchers who will be staying there for a long time. Also, there is enough equipment and technology for science on the moon to evolve greatly. The living environment will be buried in the ground to protect itself from meteorites and the sun’s rays and finally we have made a satellite which will be above the camp to help us communicate with the earth.

Why did you choose this location?

At the South Pole because it is the place with the most pleasant temperatures which varies between -50 and 0 degrees which is perfect for exploring the moon. Also, this is the place where the sun is present the longest which is very practical for the cultivation of plants to eat, also the plants to generate oxygen need a lot of light but what is most important with the sun is the energy generated by solar panels.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

To build all that is in the habitat we will use polyethylene, which is a very light and small material, moreover this material is contained in plastic water bottles so after the bottle is empty, we will collect it. This material is very versatile, it is a sunscreen against the sun’s rays which is very important for the survival of astronauts. This material is also very strong which can even withstand meteorite impacts without breaking and finally this material adapts to atmospheric pressure.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

At the beginning we will send water bottles from the earth by rockets, but we will set up a system which pumps the ice from the ground to the surface then which is heated at high temperature to make it liquid, and which is filtered to remove all bacteria. But that’s not all we have put in place a system that reuses wastewater for less waste.

Our food is mainly based on plants which are produced in large greenhouses, but the problem is that at the South Pole there is always the sun, and the plants should not be exposed to the sun all day, so This is why we have set up a system which requires that after about 8 hours of sunshine the curtains are placed in front of the windows.

Ready from the base we put plenty of solar panel to recover energy since at the south pole there is almost always sun but on the other hand during a solar eclipse there is more, and we must still have some power. ‘doc energy is why there are huge batteries that are recharged by Solar panels.

It is with other greenhouse that they instead of producing food only produce oxygen which is stored in huge cisterns and sent into living space when needed. The type of plants that is used the most in these greenhouses are algae because they are also edible. Also, to warm the rooms up a bit there is a system that makes sure that with the compost leftover food creates heat.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

To begin with, the crew must sleep at least 8 hours to be in good shape for the day. Then they have lunch and work begins afterwards. So, to start the work, they are doing some research on composites that the robots have brought back to the research room (computer room) during this certain time controlling the robots to map the moon and try to find interesting things. After a few hours of work, they go to dinner for 1 hour. After that they go outside to either do repairs on the moon base or to see if everything is working well and, in the meantime, someone is harvesting food and cooking for supper. Finally, after dinner the crew have some free time for themselves before going to sleep, they can even play sports.
