Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our Moon camp consists of a gymnasium, a greenhouse with a dome, houses, a water treatment plant, an area for organic waste treatment and a garage for vehicles at the ground level.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Lunar lava tubes

Why did you choose this location?

We are building our moon camp underground to be protected from radiation and meteorites. We searched for a place where we could avoid drilling on the Moon. Lava tubes arised to be the best option.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

There will be a few metals on the construction of our structure such as iron, titanium and several qualities of steel. We also chose other materials such as lunar regolith and carbon fiber. For metal foundry, we will use gas. Most of the materials will come from Earth, others we will mine.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

We will bring water from Earth until the camp is fully functional. Thereafter we will mine and melt the Moon water ice. The acquired water will be moved to the camp and later saved on an above 0ºC heated chamber.

To produce food, we will divide the farming area into several minor areas. The aim is to rotate crops and cattle, hence making the maximum use of the soil. We will also use cells and 3D print meat. Cattle could be cloned.

Flexible solar panels will be installed in the poles where is always day. The energy produced will be stored in batteries brought from Earth.

We will use algae to produce oxygen.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

Living on the Moon imply waking up, bathing, verifying informatic systems and supplies, communicating with Earth and exercising. As there is a necessity to produce food, this should be harvested. Several samples of soil, ice, produced food, Moon minerals… should be taken and studied. Resources relative data should be raised and sent to Earth. This should include repairing materials. Results inherent to the studies developed in the laboratory should be communicated to Earth too. Exercise should be done before dinner. And after, Moon inhabitants could relax and sleep.
