Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

This lunar camp is specifically designed with an objective to utilise the resources of the moon and also help us explore the moon to its far reaches. We have have designed the camp while keeping in mind all the important factors like-difficulties caused by radiation and moon dust, food, water, air and mental and physical health of the astronauts. We have also designed the camp as to harness and efficiently utilise the resources available on moon. The main objective of our camp is to develop moon into a completely self reliant refuelling and mining station which will provide considerable support in several future space missions by mining H3 from moon which is a potential resource. Not only mining on the moon but we have also designed an system known as asteroid mining satellite to mine rare minerals such as- terbium, neodimium and tantalum which are major constituent materials for manufacturing several electronic devices. This system consists of grinders to grind the dry rock, centrifuges to separate dense from light elements etc.

To protect the camp and astronauts from the frequent asteroid collisions on the moon have installed nuclear missile turrets on the camp along with a radar to sense the asteroid activity. To ensure good physical and mental health we have installed a full-fledged gym along with a arcade and television. The camp also has a research laboratory for researching the various minerals available on moon.A refuelling station will be orbiting moon which could not be designed due to limited space. Therefore our camp entirely ensures and covers all the important factors and problems faced on moon.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Shackleton crater

Why did you choose this location?

We chose Shackleton Crater as the location for developing our base because this crater is located at the south pole of moon indicating to the presence of large amounts of water ice and according to the records more high amounts of hydrogen are found here which is also a potential rocket fuel, the outer rim of the crater is frequently exposed to sunlight which is helpful as we are also a using solar power plant as the power source for the camp. The crater will also help in providing protection to the base from incoming asteroids and also help in mining.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

The dome hubs, along with the reservoirs for important gases will be constructed entirely using robotic 3-D printers using polycarbonate and will be covered with a layer of lunar soil to restrict radiations. The equipment for mining and gym along with the other electronics will be transported from the earth to the moon through several rounds of transport shuttles. The powerplants will be constructed on the moon using materials transported from earth like solar panels, nuclear reactor parts etc.

All the structures will connected through a network of large tubes made of aluminium. The major materials used will be aluminium, titanium, polycarbonate etc.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

We have designed a water purification system in which deposits of water in the form of ice will be mined from the surface of the moon and melted down to form water which will be purified and all the essential minerals will be added to make it safe for utilisation. Therefore we will use the ice water efficiently present on moon for providing the astronauts as well as the crops with water.

The food for the astronauts will be grown at the camp itself using a special system of agriculture known as aquaponics agriculture. In this process plants are grown on water. This water will contain fish which will excrete ammonia. This ammonia will be utilised by the plants for their nutrition, thus helping them grow. These crops will provide food to the astronauts.

The two primary sources of power for our moon camp will be a solar power plant and a nuclear power plant. The power produced by the solar power plant will be stored in special solar cells and will also act as reserve or backup power. While the nuclear power plant will help power the missiles and and also the research laboratory.During the lunar days solar energy would be harnessed and during the lunar nights more energy will be supplied by the nuclear power plants.

Oxygen will be provided to the astronauts through the process of electrolysis of the water acquired by melting of the ice water present on moon. This oxygen along with the hydrogen will be stored in special O2 and H reservoirs respectively.Oxygen will also be provided by the plants grown at the base. Also artificial air pressure will be maintained in the moon camp.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

Our lunar camp follows the world or greenwich mean time. The schedule of the crew will be as follows-

The crew wakes up at 5:30A.M.The astronauts have a time of 1 hour for the morning hygiene and breakfast. The crew gets ready for exercise until 7AM.After the tiring exercise, the crew gets a break of half an hour.At 8:45 A.M the astronauts are ready to do their respective jobs. All astronauts have specialised in different fields. The crew would consist of 6-12 members with an engineer, medic, scientist, miner, botanist ect.The engineer might spend most of his time working on and controlling the equipment while the scientist might spend most of his time in the lab etc.At 12 noontime astronauts have a time to talk with their family and friends virtually and to have lunch till 2 P.M.The crew is back to work.At 5 P.M all the astronauts get a break of half and hour and get started with their exercise. At 7 P.M the rovers are sent to collect samples of minerals etc found on the moon and the crew has to inspect the base whether everything is right and load the mined cargo. At 8 P.M the astronauts get time for their evening hygiene and have diner. The astronauts are now free until they sleep.

This schedule keeps the crew strong both physically and mentally. This is how a day will be on our moon base.
