Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Astronauts will go to the Moon to test out living conditions in order to see if in the future the same can be done on Mars. But also to see if there are other ways in which we can grow crops by using lunar resources like for instance lunar water.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

We chose this site because of its high peaks. Sunlight reaches ut to them nearly constantly which will enable us to get solar energy which we’ll convert into electricity. There’s also water in the craters. This will be used to grow plants.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

To build our Moon Camp we’ll use lunar dust mixed with water. We’ll need a 3 D printer to make building the base easier.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

To get water on the Moon we can collect human perspiration, water condensation inside the base. We’ll use desorption.

Plants will be grown using hydroponics. They grow using minerals and essential nutrients. Plants that will be most useful to astronauts will be chosen.

Lunar nights and days last for 14 terrestrial days. Solar panels will store energy for use later on.

Scientific research has found that regolith constraints 40 and 50% oxygen.

ESTEC and ESA have found a way to split oxygen found in regolith into oxyde on one side and compacted minerals on the other.

Method:
Place the regolith into a metal tray with salt and melted calcium.
Heat until it reaches 950°C
Using electrolysis will allow.
The oxygen to permeate the salt which can be collected

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

After 336 hours of night at last the sun rises. We get up after a good night’s sleep and get washed. We go to the greenhouses to fetch what we need for our meals of the day. We start our working day. We check machines and tools to see if everything is running smoothly and check the night’s analysis results. This being done we get into our spacesuits and go out to check our solar panels. We get in the rover to collect some lunar rocks samples. They should contain the water we need to survive. Once we get back we start working on the rocks and this takes us all day. Tired out by so much work we prepare the evening meal. We go to bed to get a good night’s sleep as the analyses continue in our laboratory. Tomorrow another day of work will have to be completed.
