Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

1-UNi  is a lunar base built for 4 astronauts to live in. Our inspration for the name 1-UNi is the Turkish scientist and astronomer Biruni.( 1(one) means “Bir” in Turkish).

Our design includes rooms where astronauts can do their daily routines, a gym to exercise and keep their muscles, a laboratory for the researchs , a control center ,a greenhouse and  some other technological devices.

We mostly planned to use curvilinear shapes in our lunar structures such as sphere and cylinder against to low gravity and internal pressure problems of the moon.

We want 8 astronauts (4 astronauts every 6 months), to examine the structure of the lunar soil and microorganisms and to collect more information about the moon and space as much as they can while they are living in our lunar base every year.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. In order to protect the astronauts we have planned to do something.

The majority of our moon camp is underground. This part of the camp is safe. For the part above ground ,the regolith layer over them will protect them from radiation. We’ll also have a system that detects meteorites approaching the camp and alerts astronauts so that in case of danger, astronauts can go to underground rooms and hide.

Because there are many parts in 3d drawing we have some difficulties in abling the link. Thats why we are sending the alternative link just in case.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

We want to build 1-UNi to the South Pole of the moon. Because:

Polar regions receive more sunlight than other regions, which is necessary for energy and plants.
Temperature differences in polar regions are less than the temperature in Equator.
The surface conditions and topographic features of the South Pole have the most convenient conditions in terms of the landing of the vehicles and the maneuvers of rovers.

• There are water ice reserves that we plan to use after melting and filtering at the South Pole of the moon.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

The camp will begin to be built by rovers before astronauts arrive the moon. First, they will build the rooms underground so astronauts can stay there when they arrive. The main material for the construction of the camp will be 3D printing of the lunar regolith. (The room walls, which are shown as glass in the design, are made so that you can see the interiors. They are actually 3D regolith prints covered with regolith layer.)

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

We will send our specially made vehicles to break the ice in the cold and constantly shaded craters at the South Pole of the moon and they will break the ice and bring them to the base. We will put the ice into the water production tank and wait for the mechanism to melt the ice and filter it. And here the water is ready to use!

Astronauts will eat the vacuumed and dried food that they bring from the world until the plant production starts and they will always have spare food stores in the storage room. We will grow polychete worms which contains %48 of protein inorder to decrease the protein need of astronauts. They will pollinate the polychete worms in the laboratory and put them in their meals, this will make it easier for them to eat. We’ll also use the feces of the worms as fertilizer to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.

As our main energy source, we planned to place solar panels attached to movable heads. The panels will have sensors that can detect sunlight, so they will always be able to face the sunlight and generate electricity. As our second source of energy we will use a hydrogen generator. The generator will convert the hydrogen we obtain from the electrolysis of water into electricity. We’ll also use hydrogen as vehicle fuel.

We will separate the water we obtained by melting and filtering the ice reserves of the Moon into oxygen and hydrogen by electrolysis. The oxygen mixed with some other gases like nitrogen that is necessary for human breathing will be delivered to all parts of the camp through a ventilation system.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

Astronauts will use the earth clock and wake up at 7 am to begin their day. After brushing their teeth and eating breakfast, they will exercise for an hour. Then , they will go down to the control center at 9 am and have a meeting with Earth to plan their daily schedule. After the meeting, all astronauts will start working according to their expertise and they will check if all systems are working properly and if there is any problem they will fix it. When they are done with their works, they will share the reports of their investigations and experiments with the base in the world. They will have dinner at 7 pm together.  After dinner they will have free time that they can read books, play games, drink coffee. But they need to sleep at 10.30 pm Sundays will be their off days so they can rest.
