Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon camp will be large enough for 2-3 astronauts. Our moon camp will be 3D printed by a rover. We will use solar and batteries to provide electricity. We will use lunar soil, food and human waste to grow Kale, and other greens. Our recycling system will turn paper and cardboard into fertilizer for the plants. We will protect the astronauts inside the moon camp by adding 3D printed regolith over the inflatable structure.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

We decided to build our shelter close to the lunar South Pole and near a small crater. There is better temperatures here. There is also a good amount of sunlight which allows us to put photovoltaic panels above the crater, which provides us a great amount of electricity. This electricity will allow us to do our plant research and power other things on the moon camp. Water found in the craters of the South Pole will provide the water we need.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

We will have airlocks brought from Earth so the shelter is airtight and attach them to inflatable structures made of polyethene and Kevlar. This polyethene works like a shield against the sun’s radiation and will keep the astronauts safe from radiation. The Kevlar makes the shelter strong so the astronauts are safe from meteorites.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

We will recycle urine and waste water using the water water recovery system used on the International Space Station. The majority of ice water mined will be used for rocket fuel and oxygen. Rovers equipped with digging equipment and ovens will extract and melt the ice.

We will bring seeds from Earth to plant on the moon such as tomato seeds, potato seeds. We will grow them in a greenhouse using soil and LED lights.

We will mainly use solar energy to power our moon camp. The solar panels will be located on top of our homes, on rovers and anywhere else on the moon camp electricity is used. We will use batteries when there is no sunlight and nuclear energy only for emergencies.

On the moon there are many ways to produce oxygen. We will grow plants to provide oxygen. We will also get oxygen by using electrolysis to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. Lastly, we will get oxygen from regolith by heating it to high temperatures and passing current through to separate out the oxygen.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

I go to the bathroom in the morning, eat breakfast and then exercise. I need to do lots of exercise because there is almost no gravity on the moon. I check everything is working like it should. I then work in the greenhouse until lunch. After lunch I check on some experiments in the lab. After dinner I brush my teeth and go to sleep.
