Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our “project” would be located near the south pole of the moon, so it would be closer to the big craters that are known to have ice reservoir. We have developed a (BCM) Boiling and Condensing Machine so that we could use that ice to produce and drink pure water, it would have a second purification system that would also work to use in another type of water (eg: urine). It goes without saying that we use this BCM to make oxigen and hydrogen return to their original form, then they could combine to make water without impurities. In our “project” we have a solar panel with a tube that takes the energy from the panel to the electrical cables that then lead to the rest of the base! And we also have a tube that represents the path from the moon to Earth for when the astronauts come and go! The dorms are inside a giant dome! Our “project” would be located near the south pole of the moon, so it would be close to the ice. The astronauts would be: a biologist, a physicist, a geologist, an astronomer and a chemist.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

We chose the lunar pole because of the ice that is found there it would be easier to get water. Also because in that area it exists less cosmic radiation, being necessary to use a smaller quantity of protection, so we would lose less time building the covers and more time gathering resources. Furthermore the fact that there is ice at the south pole would allow us to understand the molecular constitution of the lunar soil and what kind of minerals make it up. Because of the low temperatures at the poles we would have to reinforce the thermal isolation system of the colony.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

We would use insulating and reflective materials to reduce the radiation that could enter, maybe built with lunar soil (regolith). We would also use lunar rocks to absorb the radiation so we can be more calm and we can spend more time looking for resources to survive and be able to endure the maximum time without renewing the aluminum of the coating. We would also save a lot of time to figure out how to turn lunar ice into drinking water and carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

We would have a way to filtrate urine, boiling it and then condensing it again.

For food we would have to have plants that we could eat. We would built a greenery module for this.

The energy could be easily achieved with the use of solar panels.

For air we would have plants that would turn carbon dioxide into oxygen.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

First they would go out to collect the rocks and ice then they would check the mechanisms and plants. Around 11.30 am they would take a break for lunch and relax until 2pm during that time they can play billiards, table football, cards, table hockey, watch the news and talk to the family using satellites in orbit. At 2pm they would go back to work and do the round again to make sure everything is ok. Afterwards they would collect more samples and they would explore the moon, to map the terrain (very important in case they get lost they know how to get back).
