Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

On our moon camp the different areas are in 3 different domes. The domes are connected with tunnels. It has a kitchen where the food will be sustained and cooked. Astronauts may find their needs for consumption in the kitchen where they may also eat there. It has a farm in the center of the 3 domes it to gather the vegetation grew to cook. It has individual bedrooms for their personal time and sleeping hours. (This will include bathrooms.) The rooms also have gym equipment to ensure the astronaut’s physical health is taken care of. Solar panels are on top of the domes to generate energy/electricity for the technologies that will be made. Additionally, we have scooters to provide transportation for the astronauts if they would like to go out, do some research or just explore.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

On the near side of the Moon

Why did you choose this location?

We would like to build our moon camp on the near side of the Moon. We choose this location because we use solar panels to generate electricity and to power our domes and that side of the moon gets a lot of sunlight. The near side of the Moon also gets sunlight that is reflected from the Earth’s surface which is called earthshine which helps get us more sunlight.

How do you plan to build your Mooncamp? Which materials will you use?

We plan to build our moon camp using concrete, plastic, and metal. The concrete is mainly used for the walls of the domes, the tunnels are made of concreate, scooter lot, and the launchpad is also made of concreate. The rocket ship, certain appliances, gym equipment, are all made of metal.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air
Protection

The moon contains 600 billion kilograms of water. We will then extract the water by using machines. We can ensure that the water is safe by using water filters. We will then store the water in the fridge.

We can create a dome where it’s specified in producing and storing food. We can produce plants on the moon by using water, air, fertilizer, and plant them on the Lunar soil. We can sustain our food by building fridges and a freezer room to store and sustain our food.

We will use solar panels to generate energy for our camp, since solar panels only function when the sun is hitting the side of the moon you are on, we will also use Moon energy which works by utilizing the gravitational pull from the moon to generate electricity and heat. We will use the electricity and heat to power our domes and technology. Since a whole day on the moon is 27 earth days, there would be 13 days of complete darkness. We would need to use multiple light sources instead of the sun during that time.

The domes and tunnels have air tanks, so that the astronauts don’t have to wear air tanks with them everywhere when roaming around inside the domes. When the astronauts aren’t in the domes or tunnels, they take air tanks with them.

The camp will be protected from the radiation from the sun by using lunar soil to shield against it. When the sun shines on the moon, temperatures may rise greatly to 127 degrees Celsius. At ‘night’ (when the sun does not shine on the moon), temperatures can go as cold as minus 173 degrees Celsius. Since it is too hot for 13 days, we could be protected from those temperatures by having space suits that monitor the body’s temperature and go from cold to hot when needed. We have sensors to detect any nearby meteorites to evacuate or find strong material against the impact it may have.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

Our first astronaut whose named Ayah first turns on the lights all over the camp. Ayah and Lilith both head onto the kitchen to eat their food. Almost every day the eat fresh vegetables from the garden. After eating they put on the oxygen tanks to head outside and ride on the scooters. While on the scooters they collect moon samples, such as sand and rocks. They do this to do study them after leaving the moon. After they collect samples, they go into their room and exercise to maintain their good physical health. After that they check on their growing plants, once making sure that they are healthy they eat dinner. For dinner they eat a fruit salad. After dinner they shut down the lights and sleep to prepare for the next day
