Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The name of our group is AETHERS. In Greek mythology, ’Aether’ is the god of atmosphere, upper air, light and space. 4-5 astronauts can be accommodated at a time in our moon camp. The astronauts will stay in the camp for 3 months so that they will be able to explore more. On the moon, we are going to investigate the types of elements present on the moon’s surface. Our camp includes living quarters, office room, science (i.e. geology lab) and computer lab, cafeteria, green house, bathroom, storage room, kitchen and dressing room. Astronauts will conduct experiments on the minerals found in the craters due to asteroid and comet impacts.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the lunar poles

Why did you choose this location?

We will build our moon camp close to the lunar poles as there is water in the form of ice present in the poles. This ice will help us know the history of the formation of the moon and it also helps us find many asteroids and comet materials that existed millions or billions of years ago. The ice in the lunar poles is really helpful to us because if the ice is extracted, it can be turned into breathable oxygen and water for astronauts.

How do you plan to build your Mooncamp? Which materials will you use?

We will use CNC machines to make the parts like the walls and floors. It will be built on the Earth itself and then taken to the moon where it will be assembled. Astronauts will assemble the camp with the help of robots. The moon camp is covered using phenolic impregnated carbon ablators. This material is less dense and hence it can withstand hot temperatures. The interior is built using gypsum board as it is lightweight and can be easily disbanded.

The water will be transported from the Earth. And then when they reach the moon, they will be able to purify the urine if they are out of water. Special rovers are employed to mine the pole of the moon for ice and to carry it to the camp, where it is purified. This water will be used for drinking and watering the plants in the green house.

They will carry the food from the Earth. These foods will be freeze dried. Astronauts eat freeze dried food to keep it from rotting, or to have a longer life. The camp includes a transparent, dome shaped greenhouse. In which the astronauts can grow plants like tomatoes, peas, spinach etc. for their own consumption.

We will use solar panels and batteries. We use solar panels because we want to utilize the natural resources. The solar panels are located on top of each dome.

Using the method of electrolysis oxygen is obtained. Electrolysis separates water into its constituent forms which is hydrogen and oxygen. For emergencies we will have oxygen supplied in tanks from earth.

The material used is phenolic impregnated carbon ablator. This material is less dense and it can withstand hot temperatures. There will be more than 2 layers protecting our moon camp from the radiation of the sun.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

A typical day on the moon would start with breakfast. In a day, the astronauts will be conducting experiments on minerals and water, repairs, moonwalks, etc. After a long day of work, the next thing to do is eat dinner. Most foods that the astronauts will have will be sent from earth. Because of this, all the food will be dehydrated as water increases the weight of the package. After exercise, astronauts can watch T.V!! The astronauts’ specific space agency will live stream sports matches, opera, serials, etc. Finally, the long day comes to an end. As there are 4-5 members in our moon camp, we will have 2 astronauts to be the explorers who will go out and discover new places and find samples to send back to earth. One of these astronauts will also be the leader. There will also be 2 computer technicians and one nurse. Finally we have 1 scientist who can study the samples and perform research.
