Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our group name is the moon walkers because we want to explore the moon. We have set our camp at the nearer side of the moon facing Earth. The crater where we have set up our camp is called the “Mare Nectaris.” We will take 6 astronauts and plan to stay there for 6 months. During our stay there we will execute some experiments to find out if we can make the moon a habitable place and if we can find fossils on the moon. Parts of your camp are electrical room, two bedrooms, Kitchen, greenhouse (aeroponic and hydroponic), Med-bay and bathrooms

We will use CNC machines to build our camp, solar panels, antennas etc. We will use ESA’s new technique to create oxygen on the moon, we will acquire our oxygen from the Lunar Regolith which is abundant in oxygen (around 40-45% oxygen) we will extract the oxygen and supply it to the astronaut, we will also use electrolysis which requires breaking down water into oxygen. The Moonwalkers are set to explore and colonize the planet.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

On the near side of the moon which faces the earth

Why did you choose this location?

The Mare Nectaris is Temperature controlled as it is lava plain. The moon camp being at the Mare Nectaris will cost less and will require less energy for thermal control because it is a lava plain meaning it’s warmer than other craters. The surface condition is warm.

How do you plan to build your Mooncamp? Which materials will you use?

We plan to build our Moon camp on the moon crater known as the Mare Nectaris, we will use CNC machines to build our camp and Solar panels, antennas, batteries etc. will be supplied from Earth. We do not have any transparent buildings.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air
Protection

We will get our water from the distillation process which is when Urine is purified and cleaned until it is safe and drinkable water. The water will be used for drinking, washing, bathing, excess water and emergency supply.

To feed our hungry tummy, we will use the crops grown in the greenhouses built in our camp. We will use both hydroponic and aeroponic systems to grow our crops. We will grow lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes etc. We will also have meat supplied from earth, by taking cells from chickens, cows etc.

We will use Solar Panels and Batteries to power our moon camp, during the night we will switch to use our batteries which get charged by the Solar Panels.

We will use ESAs new technique to create oxygen on the moon, we will acquire our oxygen from the Lunar Regolith which is abundant in oxygen (around 40-45% oxygen) we will extract the oxygen and supply it to the astronaut; we will also use electrolysis which requires breaking down water into oxygen. N2 can be supplied from earth or dying plants too.

So we around the moon camp we can put layers around it as we do in the satellite i.e. Whipple shield, and cover our habitat with a thick layer of lunar rock.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

We will follow the Universal Coordinated Time (UCT) time zone. The astronauts will wake up at 6:00 AM and sleep at 9:30 pm with 2.5 hours of exercise. As they are on the moon they will not be doing the same work-related things that we do on planet Earth. But they can work on the experiment that they have planned, that is to find fossils or try to make the moon a habitable place or not. They can also try to build more camps on the moon and discover new ways of getting oxygen as they are going to be staying on the moon for 6 months. As for the jobs of the astronauts’ one will protect the camp as they will enhance or make an advanced lunar rock dome, the other can be in charge of the food supply. if there is less food they will contact Earth for food supply from ESA’s office, meanwhile the other astronauts will be separated into groups to research on the planet they’re given and once the group brings information they will give it to the person communicating or in charge of the information center, obviously we need exercise on the moon to keep fit so one will be in charge of the exercise center.
