Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our colony will have three interconnected towers. The towers form a triangle with tunnels/points to connect their floors. Each tower will have three to four floors. The highest floor will be the Communications Room, where astronauts will be able to communicate with Earth.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Shackleton crater

Why did you choose this location?

We chose this crater because its location on one of the poles: the South. At this pole, the temperatures are around 50ºC and 0ºC, and there is always sunshine there! The moon’s axis of rotation is roughly parallel to its axis of translation, which means that in the polar areas there are areas exposed to sunlight almost permanently. These areas are called spikes of eternal light, and are very important for future human settlements. The crater is also one of the most likely sites for a future lunar base.

How do you plan to build your Mooncamp? Which materials will you use?

We plan to 3D print our colony with lunar materials. We will bring the printer disassembled, and then assemble it at the place we will place it on the moon. We will also bring some inflatables and lighter materials from Earth.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air
Protection

The areas on the moon are really dry and we need 2l of water per day. As so, we will we reuse and recycle the water we use in our daily life. Nevertheless, we can not rely entirely on this, so will obviously need water supplies from Earth.

We plan to make, at the South Pole, a greenhouse with plantations, since that is where we intend to make the lunar colony, and because it has sunlight most of the time. We intend to do a circular system where we water the plantations with reused or recycled water and in return collect the water coming from the transpiration of plants. The greenhouse will have varied plants: carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, for example.
We would like a varied diet, as eating the same thing every day…would not be healthy!

The Shackleton crater, at the south pole and where we plan to build our colony, is the best place to produce electric energy from solar energy, because there is always sunlight. In case an eclipse occurs, our solution is to use fuel cells, thus storing energy. And since the distance between the solar panels and the lunar colony is pretty short, we find the solution proposed quite practical.

On the International Space Station, electrolysis is used to produce oxygen by splitting water into two components: oxygen and hydrogen. In our camp, we will use electrolysis but also algae. Algae and plants could serve as air sources as well as food sources. For algae, we need about 8 square meters per person, and for plants approximately 13 square meters per person.

We are going to create a very strong fortress for lunar radiation, based on compressed plastic which is very strong.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

After getting out of bed, the astronaut leaps into the bathroom. He does his needs, washes his hands, and the dirty water goes into the greenhouse, where it will be filtered to water the vegetables. Next, the astronaut goes to the gym to exercise. Then he takes a quick shower, and the water will once again be redirected to the greenhouse. He collects some vegetables, and sows others. He has lunch, and then goes to the laboratory, to study and do some research. Then he goes to the Communication Room to communicate his findings and make a report to Earth. Later, he exercises again, and has dinner. After a day, he goes to the dormitory, where he will rest.
