Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

On the Moon we will have water, energy, protection, air, food and everything needed to live properly. So we believe that we can bring a good space for human beings. With our project, it will be easier to live on the Moon as if you were on Earth. Astronauts will be able to do research, rest, to exercise and have fun.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Shackleton crater

Why did you choose this location?

Because in the Shackleton Crater we have the problem of power and temperature solved. The Moon’s axis of rotation is roughly parallel to its axis of translation, with only a 5 degree inclination, which means that in the polar areas there are areas exposed to sunlight permanently, or almost permanently. As so, it will be easier for us to farm and to produce energy there.

How do you plan to build your Mooncamp? Which materials will you use?

Our camp will have a kitchen, a living room, a dining room, three bedrooms, and three bathrooms. We will also build an aquarium, a laboratory and a greenhouse. We will use glass and metal to make the infrastructure. We will also manufacture the glass and metal already on Earth, ready to go to the Moon.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air
Protection

On the Moon we will need 2 litres of water per day per person, so taking water with us would be a good option. The water recycling system used on the International Space Station will enable a water supply, recycling the water used to wash the dishes and the water that we humans produce.

We are going to have to create an isolated structure. As there is no atmosphere, we are going to have plants that give us food and produce air. For that we need fertile soil and also light to help plants carrying out photosynthesis. This means that, during the lunar day, we have to simulate night by removing the light from the greenhouse, and during the lunar night, we have to simulate day by using lamps. We will grow plants beans, tomatoes, aubergines, peppers, rice, pumpkin, beetroot and spirulina.

There is no climate on the Moon, which means solar energy is a solution. There are places at the poles where the sun is always shining, and there is there where will put our solar panels. We will put solar panels in several locations so that there is always one solar panel getting sun, even during lunar eclipses, events which last few hours and occur a few times a year.

We will use plants to give us food and air at the same time, after all it is due to plants that we get oxygen on Earth.

As there is no atmosphere on the moon like on Earth we decided to make our construction below ground because it is safer. Still is not protected enough, so we will build a barrier to protect us. This barrier will be strong and will keep us from being hit by various meteors and hazards.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

During the day the astronauts will work in the laboratory and in the greenhouse, and at night they will switch off the lamps that we will use to make the plants feel on Earth. Then they will go to their rooms and each one will lie on their own bed. Everyone will share bedrooms, bathrooms, living room and kitchen, so they need to be able to live together. In the greenhouse they will make the plants grow healthy according to their needs, in the laboratory they will explore undiscovered facts about the galaxy.
