Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We tried to apply a realistic approach to our base model as much as we could to make it happen by 2050. In the early years of our base, we will be transporting resources from Earth. For the future self-sufficiency of the base (up to 2080) experimental tests will be carried out on the use of local resources. Currently, our base can accommodate 3 astronauts for long-term missions. The astronauts will be transported to the Moon using Orion via the Gateway, where they will land on the Moon. We also thought it would be possible to import He3 from the Moon if our base expands. This will be studied on Earth and will be a good element for investors and further commercialization of the Moon. Our base will use proven methods and new experimental methods in producing oxygen or electricity. We want to study the behavior of animals and plants in a six-in-six gravity and artificial environment. We also want to test experimental ways to obtain materials necessary for life that can be used during Mars expeditions. We named our base the compass for two reasons. The first one is because it’s the name of our favorite band’s song. The second reason is because it is a center in itself for finding directions.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the lunar poles

Why did you choose this location?

We decided to build our base in the southern hemisphere. We chose this place for several reasons. There are smaller temperature fluctuations at the poles of the Moon (-60°C- 0°C) thus lower power consumption would be required to control the temperature at the base.We also chose this place from data of the LRO satellite, because there is water and in our opinion it could be geologically interesting. Since the base is not located inside the crater or near the mountains, our solar farm could operate all the time.

How do you plan to build your Mooncamp? Which materials will you use?

We made the exterior of our base from a high and low temperature resistant metal alloy. We covered the inner part with an insulating materialThe base is designed to protect astronauts from unavoidable conditions (temperature fluctuations, cosmic and solar radiation, micrometeorites). We will provide communication with high-tech devices that we bring from the world. Our solar panels will be activated against heat insufficiency and possible malfunctions. At the same time, smart system robots will be used at our base.

Protection

In the initial stages of the base we will have to import water. Experiments, if we can obtain water from the extraction of lunar ice at the poles of the Moon, and if our water can be used as a result of extensive tests, we will benefit from this water in the future.

We will set up a moon farm where we will grow legumes, soybeans, seaweed, radishes, salads and other fruits and vegetables. Apart from these, we will bring food and beverages from the world in canned form.

The largest source of electricity will be solar panels (up to 90%). We will store electricity in high-capacity batteries, which we will use as a backup energy source during moonlit nights or blackouts. Experimental and backup source using a generator. We will try to make rocket fuel from water according to the principle of electrolysis.

In the initial stages, we will import a breathable atmosphere, but later we will import oxygen-producing algae and nitrogen-producing bacteria from Earth to make it permanent for the astronauts.

Thanks to the satellities at the top of the accommodation, we can detect the approaching dangers in advance and take precatiobs accordingly.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

wake up at 5.45

morning routine until 7.00

check systems up to 7.45

consultation with the Gateway daily schedule until 8.45

three astronauts will practice for an hour

lunch at 12.00

time to rest until 13.30

time for experiments

at 5 pm,three astronauts will do their hobbies

at 7 pm there will be dinner and then with the crew of the Gateway there’ll be a meeting of what happened during the day and they’ll prepare for the next day

they’ll go to bed at 8.45 p.m.

The astronauts at our base will be scientists from various fields. We would have a doctor and a biologist to study the body and the animal in one sixth gravity. There will be a materials engineer who will test new procedures or repair the base. The crew will also include a geologist who will study the Moon’s surface. The geologist spent most of his time on the surface with the engineers. Physicists and chemists would be in the process of various experiments. We would try to train multidisciplinary astronauts.
