Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The moon camp that we have designed is situated at the North Pole of the moon and make use of natural Lava Tubes as living spaces. We will have large domes on the surface and lift shafts in the vertical sections of Lava tubes. This will be powered by our solar panels that are our main source of electricity. We have small rovers that can dig for ice. They have tanks that use reflection to keep the water from boiling. The greenhouse is partly underground to cool the water that hydrates the soil. There is a big dome to ensure the safety of the camp

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the lunar poles

Why did you choose this location?

We are building our moon camp close to the Lunar North Pole and in the Lava Tubes

We chose this location because it has the least variation in temperature and has spaces to live that have already been created and so would be quicker to set up.

How do you plan to build your Mooncamp? Which materials will you use?

We are using silicone in the big dome as it is readily available on the moon. The food in the Greenhouse is partly grown on earth soil and partly grown on lunar soil. This is so that we can see the difference between them. All the machinery would be brought from earth as it would be too labour intensive to manufacture it in space. The ISS offers an insight as to what would roughly happen.

To provide our astronauts with water, we are going to use ice that has been melted down with power from Solar Panels. We will get this ice by drilling in nearby craters.

We are going to grow our food in the greenhouse. The astronauts will live on a plant based diet. The greenhouse can be raised and lowered into the dome to give the plants a natural light and dark cycle.

All of our energy will be created by our solar panels which are protected from lunar regolith and meteorites by the silicon dome. There will be back up batteries to provide energy in case of any failure.

The air will be provided by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen through electrolysis.

There is a large silicon dome around the entire camp. This will protect from radiation and meteors but will still allow light into the camp. Silicon is readily available on the Moon so it is a good substance to use.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

The astronauts would wake up and go through their morning routine. Then they would work until they had elevenses. After that would be Lunch which would consist of the various foodstuffs that were grown and harvested in the greenhouse. There would also be annual food restocks where the astronauts would receive dried food sachets.  They would be able to exercise using resistance bands. They would also have to carry out various experiments to help advance our understanding of human life in space. These would be similar to the experiments already done on the ISS but would also include observing the Universe on the far side of the Moon.
