Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We named our lunar camp Space Oddity to pay tribute to a very famous singer in the 1970s, David Bowi.

In our lunar base we want to accommodate 4 astronauts. We want to advance our scientific research in lunar biology. In addition, we also want to search for new species, such as microorganisms, to learn more about the form of life outside the earth.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the lunar poles

Why did you choose this location?

We decided to set up camp at the lunar North Pole for several reasons. Firstly thanks to the exposure of the sun which is almost constant which is favorable for the plants thanks to the water in the craters. In addition, thanks to the sun, this will allow us to have a greater source of electricity which will be able to supply the base.

How do you plan to build your Mooncamp? Which materials will you use?

The materials we are going to use for the base are polyethylene, stainless steel rubber and titanium. The polyethylene will serve as protection against the sun and the cold. Titanium resists corrosion, is lightweight and withstands of extreme temperatures. The stainless steel rubber its role is to resist the shock meteorites which are practically constant so we will have surplus

Protection

We will harvest blocks of ice then melt them and then filter the water to reduce toxic substances and will be used daily by astronauts. The rest of the water will be given to the plants to grow our plants and the vegetables to harvest.

We produce our food in a greenhouse where we grow several vegetables and legumes such as carrots, lentils, seaweed and others. Our proteins will be in dehydrated bags for better preservation.

Electricity is provided by solar panels installed outside the base constantly glazing the sun. It will be protected by electromagnetic waves. For the return to earth of the rocket we prepared in advance gallons of fuel more than necessary to ensure a safe return.

For oxygen there is a system that connects the greenhouse to the moon base and we will also have algae for a more constant oxygen supply. The smaller amount of nitrogen would come from the excrement produced by the astronauts, so we will add an area unifier to make life in the base more comfortable.

To protect our camp it is very simple it will be underground so that the astronauts are protected from micrometeorites as well as from the cold since the camp will be made of polyethylene for better protection.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

The astronauts will get up on London time so 6:00 a.m. They will have 1h30 to prepare their hygiene, lunch and prepare their program for the day. They will check the base to see if there are any problems. At 10 a.m. he will start intensive exercise for 1 hour non-stop then from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. he will do experiments and cultivate the greenhouse. From 12:00 until 12:45 there will be dinner. Then he will do gymnastics until 2 p.m. Thereafter he continues their experience until 6 p.m., after his dinner and will have free time until 8 p.m. and they will recheck the base to finally fall asleep at 9:30 a.m.
