Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

There are two main areas in the moon camp: the solar panels area and the living facilities.

The solar panels area produces electricity to power the moon camp. On the other hand, the living facilities consist of a large, transparent, round roof. Under the roof, there are three domes connected by bridges, and they are the research lab, bedroom, and bathroom that astronauts will use during their stay on the moon. There is also a transparent cube that is the living room, while the building made from translucent, red walls is where astronauts grow plants. Finally, there is a black room for batteries that store extra solar energy.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

The lunar poles have suitable temperatures where humans can live. They also have water ice that astronauts can mine for water, and they get plenty of sunlight for the solar panels to produce electricity.

Food
Electricity
Air

To get water, astronauts will mine the water ice found on the lunar poles using robots and melt it.

Astronauts can eat the plants that they grow in one of the rooms of the moon camp. They can also eat astronaut food from Earth.

The solar panels will convert sunlight to electric power, and batteries will store extra electricity for emergencies.

There are two ways astronauts can get oxygen on the moon camp. The first is by planting plants, and the second is by heating regolith.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

To build our moon camp, we will get polyethylene and some other materials from Earth. We will also get 3D printers. When we reach the moon, we will 3D print everything we need from polyethylene and lunar soil and assemble the camp on the moon.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

A polyethylene sheet covers the entire moon camp. This sheet will protect astronauts from solar radiation and meteors.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

In the morning, after they wake up, astronauts can have breakfast and exercise for a bit. Then, they can start their workday. They can travel around the moon to visit different areas and gather samples and data. Also, they can work in their research lab and examine the samples and information they have collected. They can even study their bodies.

After finishing their work, astronauts have dinner, then relax in the living room and talk to their friends and family before sleeping.
