Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon base contains: water, food, hydrogen, oxygen, toilets and much more to ensure that the people staying on the moon have all of the necessary resources available to them. We have also included the lander, which has been made streamlined, and the moon buggy so that transportation on the moon can be made easy. The moon base is also powered by solar energy, however there are lunar batteries that can be used in emergency circumstances. In addition, the large hydrogen and oxygen tanks are located outside of the main base to ensure that it is a safe living environment. Finally, in case of an injury there is a medical room to ensure that they can be treated up on the moon as it would be very difficult to transport the injured/ill person back to Earth quickly.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Lunar lava tubes

Why did you choose this location?

We chose this location for multiple for reasons including that it is sheltered from solar radiation and solar weather. Also, it provides the base with protection from meteorites.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

We would use lunar ice and recycled water to save our resources. Also, we would have large hydrogen and oxygen storage and harvesting units. This oxygen is harvested from plants and life support; the hydrogen is harvested from the lunar atmosphere.

We would get our food using two methods. One of them would be that we could harvest them from the lunar bases hydroponics and the other would be that we could get food from Earth in rations.

We would use lunar solar panels as the majority of our power generation and then we would use batteries as a source of emergency power.

We would have recycled air and we would also have air from the hydroponic bay, which comes from the plants as they photosynthesise.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

Our base would start off as rocket modules and then would be built using prefabricated parts built on Earth or on site using 3D printers.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

The moon camp will have airlocks to keep the air in and each astronaut will have their own space suit and there will also be internal airlocks in case of breaches.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts
  • They would have to do daily airlock checks
  • They would have to do daily hydroponic harvesting
  • They would have to do scientific research
