Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We are carrying out the moon camp challenge Project, consisting of the construction
of a lunar base, which will serve the astronauts to explore and investigate the different
parts of the moon.
We must locate our base in a strategic site to get the resources we will need
throughout our stay there. In addition we must also investigate the materials that we
will use for its construction and where we would live provisionally through its
construction. With this project what we are doing is testing our limits.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

19° 46′ 12″ N, 1° 55′ 12″ W  (19.77°, -1.92°)

Why did you choose this location?

We have chosen that place as mainly inside the mountain meteorites and asteroids won´t
impact on the base making it get broken , the sun rays won´t affect us and the lunar dust will
affect us a bit less. In addition, the mountain we have chosen is near the Imbrium sea from
where we can obtain water for its different use. In this part of the moon the sun gives, except
in the period of night that lasts 27 days.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Our water will mainly be the ice that we get from the poles and we will have a
combustion stack.
The water will be obtained from the poles: first, the astronauts will come down, once
there they will have cut off the ice, they will put it in a large metal box that will be
attached to a chain that will raise it to the surface. The box will be anchored to the
Rober and transported to the base where it will be removed from the inside and
distilled to separate the water from the lunar dust and consume it.

Our astronauts will have aluminum tubes stuffed with meat, pureed chocolate, tuna
cans, frozen seafood drinks… all your food will be dehydrated and sent from the
ground on their journey. Once on the moon they will produce food through their
greenhouse, but meat and fish will have to be taken from the ground since there are
no shops to buy or animals to hunt or fish.

During the days we will use solar panel plants and during the night period we will use
energy that has been produced by the panels and stored in batteries in addition
combustion batteries. That’ll do us good.

Getting air will not be a big problem for us, the process of electrolysis (using the dirty
water already used and subjecting it to various processes to obtain oxygen) will
provide us with the necessary as this system generates between 2.3 and 9 kg of oxygen
daily and is consume about 840 grams per person a day so there will be surplus
considering that we will take 4 astronauts.
In addition, we will have the greenhouse plants that also produce oxygen.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

To build the base, first of all, half the team will have to focus on collecting the natural
materials from the area that will help us in the construction. Meanwhile, the other half will
begin building the base with the existing materials and machines we will bring from Earth. As
long as the construction period, which we hope will not be delayed more than a few months,
they will live in one of the modules that will later join the rest. We have planned that it will
be made for some layers of resistant materials like aluminium, titanium, carbon fiber,
nickel hydrourb, ceramic fiber, gold sheets and zinc.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

To fight with the problems that cause being on the moon in the long term astronauts will
be changed from time to time. In addition, the base has several layers of resistant
materials to be less affected by different events such as lunar dust, meteorites, sun
rays…

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

An astronaut´s day will be based on the collection of lunar samples that will be
analyzed later in the lab. The mission for which they have been sent is mainly that, but
the tasks they must perform day by day are many more.
They must take care of the plants that will later make their consumption. They must
go for ice to transform it into water , this obviously will not be done every day, but
often. Once the water is obtained they also have to distill it.
Another function they must perform is to keep in the observatory looking around the
space, one of the reasons for which they have been sent, investigate.
And finally they will be there need to exercise in the gym that will have the base since
there is not the same gravity as on Earth and the body and the muscles deforms.
Leaving all that once done must be in contact with Earth, making new contributions to
science and astronomy, this function will be carried out through the communication
room.
