Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our Moon Camp will be built underground having the size of half a football camp. It is made to accommodate around ten to fifteen people, as the structure will need people with different skills and knowledge such as engineers or doctors. We chose as building materials, most Moon natural resources such as lunar soil (regolith). The aim is to have a communitarian dorm, a kitchen, a gym, a laboratory, a nursery and offices. In higher ground, will be placed the communication system and a greenhouse to food production.  Still on the surface, we will have a landing zone for rockets and solar panels powering the hole installation. The entry to our colony is made by an elevator where is done the transition between the Moon atmosphere and the breathing air of the colony.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Lunar lava tubes

Why did you choose this location?

Moon has no atmosphere, therefore no protection against meteorites. In Lunar Poles, the temperatures vary between -50ºC and 0ºC, which are conditions humans can easily bare. The vantage of building undergroound is the protection against bombarding radiation and temperature swings.

We will bring water from Earth. When living on the Moon we are going to clean it to reuse it as it is very limited.

We are going to produce our foor in the greenhouse. It will be mainly vegetables.

As lunar poles have sunlight during almost all day, we chose to install several solar panels. Therefore our main power source will be solar energy.

We will bring some compressed air from Earth at first. Then we thought in producing our own air in the camp.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

The greenhouse will be built using a very thick and strong type of glass and metal, allowing the sunlight to enter while protecting the plants from external dangers. We chose to live in moon caves on lunar poles. This way we can use the cavern walls as our camp walls. The rest of the colony will be 3D printed.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Building on the underground, in moon caves, shield the camp against radiation, temperature swings, meteorites and sandblasting from the rockets engines when landing or departing.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

First in the morning, we are going to explore Moon as the Moon is really big and most of its surface unexplored. After, we will rest in the dorms.

At lunch time, we are going to cafeteria. After lunch, we are going to the workshop to build a lunar car able to run and explore the Moon in a better way. When the car is already built, we go to the greenhouse to harvest some vegetables. We cook them and have dinner.

At 10 p.m., it’s bed time.
