Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?
– Location: The Moon camp is located at the south pole, in the area of Connecting Ridge. At the south pole, there are a lot of craters which are full of frozen water, which is indispensable for the production of dihydrogen and dioxygen used to enable the astronauts to breathe. What’s more, the south pole is illuminated 95% of the time during the year, which permits the solar and photovoltaic panels to be charged. So the south pole is a strategic location.
How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.
Matériaux : cellules photovoltaïques, carbone, aluminium, acier, kevlar, titane, magnésium (léger mais résistant) Les murs : en toile La surface: structure en sandwich toile double avec nid d’abeille souple – Construction: For the building of the camp, the sending of the material is made with rockets. The 8 units of the camp are all connected by tunnels. The units are:
The units are in cloth (the type of cloth used to make stand-up paddle boards), covered by kevlar nets and supple photovoltaic cells. To enable light to enter the units, an anti-radiation window covers the tips of the units. Material needed: photovoltaic cells, carbon, aluminium, steel, kevlar, titanium, magnesium (light but resistant). The walls: in cloth The surface: double cloth sandwich honeycomb structure The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.
– Protecting the astronauts: To protect the astronauts from the very dangerous moon environment, a kevlar net is used to stop micro-meteorites. As far as radiations are concerned, the units prevent outside radiations to enter thanks to filtering windows. These units are also pressurized so as to have breathable air inside the units, and they are equipped with thermic regulators.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.
The crew will be composed of 4 astronauts, each of them will have their own specialty, but they will also be able to replace one another. There will be the commanding chief pilot of the moon mission, a researcher who will be in charge of science experiments on the Moon, a biologist who will supervise the evolution of the Moon farm crops and an engineer who will be in charge of all the systems in the camp. The crew will start their day by getting up at 7 am and getting breakfast together in the kitchen. At about 8 o’clock, each crew member starts working ; as mentioned before, each astronaut has a specialty, but they also have to acquire and develop their knowledge in other domains. Thus, for example, the engineer astronaut will be in charge of missions concerning the moon camp systems. Work will also consist in checking the correct functioning of the water electrolysis, pilot robots to bring ice into the water tanks, make experiments on the Moon, verify the thermic regulator, do research, look after the farm, use the hydrogen produced by the water electrolysis to make fuel batteries, make tools using a 3D printer, etc. At 12, lunch for everybody, at 1 pm work starts again until 5 pm when the astronauts will meet in the sports room to do between 1 to 2 hours of physical exercise to fight against the adverse effects of the lack of gravity on the Moon, such as the loss of bone and muscle mass among others… At 6.30 or 7 pm until 8 pm, other tasks will be carried out like reporting about the missions of the day and communication with the Earth. At 8 pm, everyone will get together to have dinner and free time until 10 pm when they will go to bed. |
