Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

This is a purpose-built base for scientists,located at the North Pole of the moon.The circular structure makes the most of the craters created by the meteorite(effectively preventing damage to the house) and provides plenty of space for scientists.Solar installations are built at the South Pole of the moon and stored energy and transported to the base to provide electricity for the base and light for the plant house. After processing, the ice collected by the robot is split in the two in the plant house, with one part used for plant growth and the other for People’s Daily life.In addition, recycling water treatment will also solve part of the water shortage problem.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Our team envisioned a lunar summer camp in an impact crater at the moon’s North Pole. The temperature at the poles of the moon is relatively suitable, between -50~0℃.It can be habitable for human beings only by increasing some warmth measures. Moreover, there is continuous sunlight at the poles, which can provide sufficient solar energy. The existance of some permanent low temperatures at the poles is conducive to lunar resource mining and lunar sample return. The Arctic,on the other hand, has more accessible water ice that can provide water.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

The construction scheme is the flexible module assembly type: the flexible module assembly type is similar to the inflatable module of the International Space Station, with large transport folding ratio, which can realize the air-tight function. After the expansion, the shape can be designed strongly, which has advantage for space layout. In order to prevent the influence of lunar surface irradiation on the structure of the inflatable chamber. The thickness of the coverage is based on the fact that it can effectively block cosmic rays.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

The lunar module can block sunlight and radiation,high-strength materials can ward off meteorites for astronauts, and good air tightness can allow astronauts to breathe normally.Isolate the heat exchange between inside and outside the cabin to form a certain constant temperature zone, which can provide comfortable temperature for astronauts.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Robots collect ice from the lunar North Pole surface and extract water from the soil, which is then transported back to the base where it is distilled and filtered for drinking water

The plant room provides 8 hours of sunlight and 12 hours of darkness for plants to carry out normal life act ivities

Solar panels built on the moon's South Pole, which move with the sun's rays, store the solar energy as electricity in lithium-ion batteries and send them back to the base for daily use.

Algae grown on the site absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide and release large amounts of oxygen for human use, which is then stored by electrolysis of water

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

Mainly used for scientific research. The moon has no atmosphere,  atmosphere,no magnetic field,no stable geological structure, and can launch rockets of large weight and manned spacecraft for space exploration. It is an appropriate astronomical launch base. The farthest side of the moon is protected from Earth’s radio waves, making it a suitable platform which to look at the universe more clearly.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Get up at 6 o’clock in the morning and then I eat breakfast,after breakfast in the  laboratory research robots lunar soil brought back from the outside,study how to extract oxygen inside, put onoxygen inside, put on spacesuits afternoon, open a rover to astronomical observatory, observation of the universe, and study the lunar surface of rock,a day after the completion of the work will drive the moon came to appreciate the sunest at the South Pole.Back at the base,we discuss today’s problems with experts on Earth.
