Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We will set up a project to simulate the habitation of the moon. In this project, we will provide a series of living and scientific conditions such as living quarters, exercise rooms, laboratories and so on for five to six lunar crew members to lay the foundation for future lunar exploration.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We are going to build a lunar base at the South Pole of the moon. The moon’s South Pole is lit for longer periods of time and has a lower temperature difference between day and night than other regions. And according to the research shows that there are a lot of water ice in the South Pole area of the moon, which can provide abundant water and sufficient oxygen for the base.In addition, the location is relatively close to the far side of the moon, which could provide convenience for future astronomical observatories on the far side of the moon.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

In the early stage, we prepared to transport some basic materials and building facilities, use 3 D printing technology to build the base in the form of bunkers, and use special materials to build the dome to reduce radiation and maintain the temperature of the base. The base is divided into two parts: above ground and underground. The underground part is used as warehouse and emergency place, while the above part is made up of five parts: laboratory, central control room, sports room, living area and planting room, serving as the daily living and working area of astronauts.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Our lunar encampment will be reinforced with lunar soil to mitigate possible meteorite impacts. The surface of the base will be made of a special radiation-resistant transparent material, allowing access to information from the outside world while reducing radiation in the cosmos. In addition, if the base is threatened, personnel can access the underground emergency space through emergency transfer channels.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

In the early stage, some water can be transported from the earth for basic living, and in the later stage, water ice can be mined from the nearby meteorite craters to maintain living needs. In addition, there will be a recovery system to recover water from the base.

The lunar soil cannot grow plants, so we will send some nutrient solution and high-quality crop seeds to the plant culture room at the base for cultivation. Until the plants grow, we deliver some food to keep the astronauts healthy.

The moon is rich in solar energy, and we’re planning to build a solar power station around the base to generate electricity. In addition, there’s a lot of helium-3 in the lunar soil, which could also be used for fusion power generation.

On the one hand, we use electrolytic water to produce oxygen, and on the other hand, we use sodium peroxide to react with carbon dioxide to produce oxygen.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

The main purpose of our lunar base is to carry out scientific investigation, make statistics and collect lunar resources, and lay a solid foundation for future human space exploration.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Morning, astronauts from the living area in the central control room to check the equipment running status, and then through the base of peripheral equipment observation, finally to plant culture chamber to observe plant growth condition, after being found base safe and normal operation of the crew started to eat to supplement energy At noon, the astronauts put on a suit to a lunar base periphery reconnaissance resource and bring samples back to base and supplement energy Then enter the laboratory experiment, after the end of the test chamber to movement exercise, guarantee the healthy body In the evening, after added the physical strength again to check the operation of the equipment, all entered the living quarters after normal rest.
