Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

First of all, after the astronauts arrive on the moon, they will choose the right lava tube as the construction site of the lunar camp, and then use the lunar soil and urine for 3D printing to obtain building materials. Lunar Rover and solar panels are directly transported to the moon by spacecraft. After the construction of the lunar camp is completed, the plant seedlings will be transported to the moon by spacecraft. Before that, the water and food needed by astronauts will be delivered by the earth.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

The long, curved and meandering passage below the surface of the moon is called “lava tube”, which may be caused by the pressure formed by meteorite collision, moon earthquake and earth gravity. Lava tubes can be hundreds of meters wide in diameter, providing plenty of space for underground lunar outposts. The top of the lava tube protects astronauts from space radiation, cosmic meteorite collisions and huge temperature differences. The plant culture glass house is also built in the underground lava tube, and the lighting is replaced by artificial lighting.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

A new experiment has found that urea in urine is a good adhesive, which can be used to bond the surface debris of the moon, greatly increasing its ductility and durability. The surface debris brick can be 3D printed from the surface debris of the moon and urea in the urine of astronauts. This kind of brick is obviously the building material of the moon base with the lowest cost and the shortest acquisition time.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

The lunar camp is in the lava tube under the surface of the moon, which can effectively avoid the threat of meteorite, cosmic ray, dust and so on.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

The sand of the moon contains a lot of oxygen, which can be used to make fresh water and oxygen. This idea is to use forklift to excavate the sand on the lunar surface automatically, select the iron minerals containing oxygen from them, and then use hydrogen to reduce the iron minerals containing oxygen to produce fresh water.

Under the condition of space weightlessness, plant seeds in lunar soil have higher germination rate, faster growth, earlier flowering or heading time and easier planting. Glass house can be used for planting and even breeding, so as to obtain food.

On the moon, there is no wind, no rain, no sunshine, and there is no atmospheric absorption. The radiation intensity of the sun is about 1.5 times that of the earth. Therefore, solar energy can be used for lighting, heating, heating and power generation on the moon. Of course, if necessary, nuclear power plants can be built on the moon to ensure sufficient energy supply for the base.

Scientists found that the sand of the moon contains a lot of oxygen, so they can use the sand of the moon to make fresh water and oxygen. This idea is to use forklift to excavate the sand on the lunar surface automatically, select the iron minerals containing oxygen from them, and then use hydrogen to reduce the iron minerals containing oxygen to produce fresh water. With water, electricity makes water electrolysis, and oxygen and hydrogen are obtained. In addition, plants can also provide oxygen.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

The lunar camp is built in the lava tube under the moon, so it is not suitable for sightseeing. However, there are few people on the moon and the camp area is small, so there is no need to develop commerce. This kind of small lunar base is suitable for scientific research, and it is more convenient to explore the secrets of the interior of the moon when it is located underground.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

In the early morning, astronauts can pick up fresh vegetables in the plant culture room and finish a delicious breakfast. Subsequently, astronauts can carry out a series of scientific research activities in the camp. Because the camp is in the underground lava pipe, astronauts can use the lunar rover to carry out small-scale activities around the lunar surface outside the camp, and repair the solar panels on the lunar surface at the same time. After a day of scientific research activities, astronauts can rest and study in the bedroom.
