In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our lunar camp is named LZ, the eternal lunar base.It will be used for scientific research, in the lunar soil and minerals;And the effects of the lunar environment on the growth of plants and animals. And to explore and analyze resources on the moon.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

The base will be located next to a crater at the moon’s South Pole.Temperatures in the region are also more favourable than those in the lower latitudes of the equator, avoiding extreme temperatures ranging from 100° C during the day to −150° at night.The walls of some lunar craters are sufficiently sunny to provide a continuous supply of solar energy and the outer walls are relatively flat.In addition, the high concentration of hydrogen in the lunar crater is detected, and the temperature difference between the top and bottom of the crater is large. It is highly likely that there are water resources, which are convenient for mining for camp use.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

For the material, we want to use the material that can prevent radiation. The outermost layer of the wall of the mediocrity base, and the inner layer will be polished into the wall with the stone of the moon.Between the two walls, gases that quickly absorb heat will be used to keep the lunarbase at the right temperature at all times.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

In order to protect the astronauts from radiation hazards, the outer walls will be made of radiation-absorbing materials to reduce the radiation hazards to a certain extent;And there will be additional foods in the astronauts’ daily diet that can reduce radiation and reduce radiation recovery.To keep the astronauts at a comfortable temperature at all times, quick cooling gases are used in a compartment between the walls.When the astronauts drive the rover back to the base, we built two rooms inside the base and the room where the lunar rover is parked. The outermost room serves as a buffer zone to deal with the potential hazards on the astronauts and prevent them from being brought into the base

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Part of water can come from every time brought by the moon, the other part by mining in the camp is located down will the ice on the moon, collecting recycling to the base, its electricity to melt, and obtain pure water by electrolysis, respectively for the oxygen chamber, pure, and for the use of astronauts, the pure and for astronauts to join respectively for the astronauts, or plants for minerals.

The food comes from vegetables and meat grown in the culture room and from supplies brought to the moon every time and food stored in the pantry. It also recycles vegetables using food waste and foreign matter from people and animals to provide fertilizer.

Electricity comes from the radiation absorbed by the outermost radiation shield that is transferred to the base and converted to point water to make hydrogen for storage, solar energy absorbed by the solar panels, and energy converted from burning hydrogen to heat.

The oxygen obtained by electrolysis water and the passage of plants in the culture room is treated and supplied to astronauts and animals in the culture room, and the carbon dioxide produced by human and animal respiration is collected and supplied to plants for photosynthesis. And the sodium peroxide they brought with them to the moon to convert carbon dioxide from the lunar base into oxygen.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

Our lunar camp is mainly used for science. In the camp we have the culture room, the mining room, the exploration room, the research room. CCTV was used to study the conditions of plants and animals growing in the lunar environment. The exploration chamber is used to study the lunar surface or deep topography and is responsible for the acquisition of lunar soil in different places. The laboratory is used to study the mined soil and lunar soil brought back by the lunar vehicle lock. And in the health clock can carry on the detection to the astronaut’s body, obtains the human body change.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

At the beginning of the day you can go to the dining room for meals, after which the staff on duty check the running condition of the equipment through the computer in the control room.The control room can be used to control the various indicators of the environment in the culture room, so that the environment in the culture room can achieve the best environment suitable for the growth of animals and plants;It also controls the operation of equipment in the mining room and electrolysis room, making the oxygen, hydrogen, and water needed, and supplying the room requiring the resource through the pipeline;Through the control room, the control room that stores the electric energy outputs the electric energy to make the whole base equipment run normally, and then the control room communicates with the people on the earth for information exchange.Then you can go to the plant and plant growth room, do plant and animal growth records and pick plants for storage or food.After dealing with the internal affairs of the base, the base personnel can go out to explore, take lunar soil samples and remotely control the rover to inaccessible areas for observation.After a certain period of exploration, we return to the base and conduct research on the retrieved samples in the laboratory.In their spare time, base personnel can go to the health room for fitness activities or to the reading room for reading.All personnel in the base will undergo regular physical examination in the health care room to ensure the health of the base personnel.At the end of the day, base staff can return to the lounge after meals to wash and rest.However, the staff of the base will implement the shift system and stagger the working and rest time, so as to ensure that someone is on the post at all times. In the equipment problem room, all staff can be reminded to do protective work quickly, so as to ensure the life safety of all staff and the normal operation of equipment.
