Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our lunar camp will be a base for exploration, research and life on the moon. The base is divided into different parts, and each part has its own equipment, such as conference room and main control room. The former is equipped with advanced computers and projection equipment for discussion, while the latter has a console to control the normal operation of the whole base. At the same time, we have oxygen generators to filter and distribute oxygen to various buildings, indispensable radar devices and greenhouses to provide vegetables for astronauts. The base has a lunar rover to scan the terrain and collect data and mining vehicles to obtain available resources. Underground are bedrooms and gymnasiums that astronauts can use to rest and enhance their adaptability to the lunar base.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We chose to build it near the moon pole, because there is sunlight most of the time near the moon pole, so that the solar energy memory can be put into operation and generate electricity. At the same time, the temperature difference between the poles is small, and there will not be a large range of cold and hot changes as on the lunar surface. Besides, there is a crater near the lunar pole, with water ice at the bottom, which can be brought back to the base. Underground buildings can be built near the crater to enhance the protection of air pressure and meteorite impact.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

Our lunar camp was initially composed of many components. On the earth, it was launched by a carrier rocket to the moon and assembled on the moon. The ground of the lunar camp is made of granite, which is solid and stable. The protective cover is made of polymer glass. Some of the most basic facilities (tables, stools, etc.) are made of stainless steel, which is light and easy to manufacture. The lunar rover is very popular The mining machine is made of aluminum alloy. The fitness equipment in the gym is made of parts on the earth and assembled on the moon. The vegetable greenhouse is equipped with thermal insulation equipment to ensure the healthy growth of vegetables.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

There are many dangers on the moon, such as meteorite, temperature, high-energy radiation and so on. My lunar camp will provide additional protection by covering the camp with lunar rock and dust, such as building a solid dome. Thermal insulation equipment is used in the lunar camp protective cover to convert electric energy into heat energy.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

In the early stage, they ate a small amount of water brought by the earth, and in the later stage, they turned it into water by looking for pure water ice at the two poles of the moon. At the same time, the urine, sweat and water in the crater were collected and purified for use by astronauts. When the solar wind strikes the lunar surface, protons in the solar wind will interact with electrons on the lunar surface to form hydrogen atoms, which migrate through the surface and attach to the oxygen of silica and other oxygen-containing molecules. Hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water.

In the early stage, we rely on the food brought from the earth, and in the later stage, we build vegetable gardens to get more food. The vegetable garden adopts greenhouse structure, which can prevent meteorite collision and allow light to enter. The water circulation device provides water for the vegetable greenhouse.

By building a large number of solar energy storage to collect solar energy and convert it into electric energy, the moon is rich in hydrogen atoms for a series of chemical reactions to produce hydrogen energy. Build solar panels to collect the energy brought by sunlight and reserve energy for the normal operation of the lunar base.

The surface of the moon is rich in mineral resources, which are collected and processed to obtain oxygen. The plants planted in the vegetable greenhouse can also produce oxygen, and air can flow between all parts. The lunar camp has special oxygen production equipment to provide oxygen for astronauts.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

In order to understand the true face of the moon, explore the various conditions of the moon, provide material for human research on the moon and promote the progress of science and technology. Meet people’s exploration of living environment outside the earth, and lay a solid foundation for human exploration of outer space.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

After millions of years of evolution, human beings have adapted to the 24-hour system. Of course, the moon is no exception. We can’t go against the biological rhythm. In the morning, the astronauts get up after eight hours of sleep to wash and then have breakfast, which includes fast food and vegetables. After breakfast, the astronauts will hold a short meeting to assign the tasks that each astronaut needs to carry out today, such as observing the movement of celestial bodies and collecting the moon’s undeveloped resources. They will transport the resources collected on the moon to the lunar camp, analyze their materials, extract useful and rare metal resources, and regularly transport them to the earth to collect the celestial bodies observed on the moon The operation process of the moon tide is reported to the scientists on earth for analysis, so as to infer the time of the moon tide and so on, and make sufficient preparations for the future habitat on other planets. In the evening, after a day’s work, after the astronauts return to the moon camp, they can first work out in the gym. Daily fitness is essential, which can help the astronauts’ bones better complete various tasks under the condition of weightlessness on the moon. After the fitness, they can take a shower. Finally, after dinner, they summarize the progress of the daily tasks in the conference hall, And report to the people in the earth headquarters. After that, you can have a rest in the dormitory.
