Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The lunar base as a whole presents a triangular structure, with the main control scientific research room in the middle. As a hub, it regulates the functions of the lunar camp, and the scientific research work is also carried out here. The main control room is surrounded by rest room, electrolytic water room and plant culture room. The electrolyzed water chamber uses solid water from the moon as raw material to produce oxygen by chemical electrolysis to supply the consumption of the whole base. In the later stage, it can also produce oxygen by photosynthesis of plants to meet part of the consumption. The plant culture room provides the necessary food for the astronauts to survive in the lunar camp. The problem of water resources is solved by melting the solid water on the moon. Build a solar power station to provide energy support for the whole base. Lunar rover is used to collect samples on the moon and other scientific research tasks.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Polar Region.First of all, about 70% – 80% of the time in the lunar polar region is under sunlight. Sufficient sunlight makes the solar power station efficiently provide sufficient electricity for the lunar base. In addition, the temperature difference in the polar region is smaller, which is more suitable for long-term stay and scientific research than other regions of the moon. At the same time, a large number of moon seas are distributed in the polar regions, and there may be a large number of water ice, so the problem of water resources can be well solved.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

In the first stage, the investigation and exploration of the moon is carried out, and the intelligent AI robot is used to select the site of the base, construct the whole shell frame of the base, and build a small base for several people to stay for a short time; in the second stage, the human assisted robot carries out the large-scale construction of the base, using concrete for the construction of walls, covering the concrete with heat preservation and radiation protection materials, and the outermost layer is covered In the third stage, intelligent robots are still used for the installation and control of precision instruments and the connection of circuits to gradually improve the basic construction of the lunar base; in the fourth stage, the problems of oxygen self-sufficiency and food source are gradually solved to make the base basically self-sufficient and start scientific research and exploration.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

To protect astronauts, we should consider the impact of radiation and foreign space objects, and use anti radiation materials and high-strength materials to build houses when building. In addition, considering the great temperature difference between day and night on the moon and the environment of complete weightlessness, the base has a temperature constant system, which can automatically adjust the temperature in the base according to the change of environmental temperature, so as to ensure that the base is in a constant temperature state for a long time, and a gravity field can be generated in the base, which can simulate the life of astronauts on the earth.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Water: in the early stage, it can be carried from the earth, and then it can be converted into water on the moon through a series of reactions using the solid water on the moon.

Food: it was carried from the earth to the moon in the early stage, and in the later stage, plant culture rooms were built in the camp for hydroponic cultivation of sweet potato and other plants.

Power: priority should be given to build a number of solar panels near the base to make use of sufficient solar energy resources. In addition, hydrogen from water electrolysis can be used as fuel.

Air: hydrogen and oxygen are electrolyzed from water in the camp and supplied to the base. In addition, the circulation with plant breeding room can be established to realize oxygen self-sufficiency.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

My lunar camp is located in the polar region of the moon, which is an ideal area for lunar scientific research. Firstly, the terrain in the polar region is relatively flat, which is conducive to the take-off and landing of the spacecraft; secondly, there are abundant resources in the polar region, which can meet the needs of the base for lunar resources research, and the abundant resources in the polar region can meet the normal operation of various activities in the base.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

When you wake up in the morning, there is a dedicated housekeeper robot to serve you: wash, breakfast, and the robot Housekeeper will serve you all the way. You can enjoy the fresh food produced in the plant culture room while enjoying the scenery of outer space. Then we started the day’s work: first of all, we should conduct a comprehensive inspection on the facilities of the base through the terminal in the main control room to prevent the base from failure. And then go to the plant culture room to observe and record the growth of the cultivated plants. After that, you can put on a special spacesuit and drive a lunar rover outside the base for sampling. You can go for a ride near the base to enjoy the landscape of the moon and our earth. After sampling, you can go back to the base to analyze and test the samples, record the data, and report the work content and completion to the earth headquarters, as well as the construction of various facilities in the base And operation. You can talk to your family on earth, introduce them to the moon you see, and rest in the capsule at night.
