Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We plan to name this lunar camp “Star Station”. This will be the first base for humans in outer space, and it means a lot, and I believe it’s just a springboard for humans to finally reach the vastness of space and touch the stars of the universe. Star Station as a first-line base for space exploration, it is a set of lunar mineral exploration, interstellar travel feasibility study, long-range energy supply station, new technology off-site practical and other multi-mission, multi-functional in one of the highly modern scientific research base. At the same time, The Star Station is equipped with a variety of recreational facilities and sophisticated escape devices to alleviate the psychological problems that astronauts may have in space and to resist all unforeseen emergencies.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

The Moon Camp is located near the Yongye area, which has water ice in the not-so-large Yongzhou area and Creep Rock. Close to the water ice area can be relatively easy to obtain the raw materials of water resources – water ice, real life astronauts biological clock is often affected by the space irregular sunlight, based on the fact that the sun can not control the light and some precision instruments need to avoid light, so choose to ensure the normal rest and work of astronauts through artificial lighting in the eternal night zone. At the same time, the camp must be close to the Yongye area, otherwise it will not be able to get the necessary sunshine. There is also a certain amount of moon rock near the camp, as this is also one of the important sources of resources.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

The main building materials of the Lunar Battalion were transported to the site by a super-capacity launch vehicle and transport spacecraft, initially installed near the site, and finally modular and integrated lifting molding based on installation drawings using small and medium-sized construction equipment, in which the required installation drawings were designed by the Group of Experts on Earth according to the actual situation on the Moon. For the choice of materials, we need to try to choose environmentally friendly materials to avoid too much pollution and damage to the moon, and we will need a large number of new composite materials to ensure the safety of the Star Station and the health of internal personnel, some materials can also be used in-place material processing. The building as a whole will mainly use high-strength steel structure and anti-pressure radiation-resistant glass structure.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

First of all, the building body must have a high degree of protection to ensure the most basic safety, such as strength, radiation protection and so on. Secondly, the quantity and distribution of emergency rescue equipment in the camp must be reasonable, standardized and scientific, safety education and training for astronauts in advance, must be done to regularly check the performance of equipment, even if the problem equipment is replaced, as far as possible to carry out regular exercises. Finally, the camp is equipped with two neutral escape pods for emergency escape.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

A small part of the early period by the moon water ice extraction purification, mainly rely on the earth supply. When the water ice water extraction technology matures, the proportion follows upside down until the water is finally fully self-sufficient.

The camp will be equipped with a vegetable-growing area where astronauts can grow fresh vegetables or fruits as one of their usual sources of food, and food such as meat and eggs that are not suitable for production on the moon will be regularly supplied by Earth via cargo ships.

There are three sources of power: electricity, chemical energy and nuclear energy. The power required for the camp depends mainly on the electricity converted from solar panels, complemented by a small amount of nuclear energy, while anti-Earth rockets or spacecraft rely on a small amount of fossil fuel supplied by the Earth.

Air is manufactured by air producers, relying mainly on a large number of moon rocks on the moon, through relatively mild chemical reactions to extract the elements needed for the camp from the moon rock, to be deployed to form a finished product, to solve the need for air.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

The main purpose of my moon camp is science. At present, the moon camp related technology is not mature, if applied to the commercial early, the commercial value can be obtained is not large, and because there are certain reasons for interests in it, it is easy to cause all kinds of safety accidents. Applied to tourism purposes is even less realistic. Therefore, only applied to science, let it promote the progress of human science is the choice to play its greatest value.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

After a comfortable night’s rest, the astronauts woke up in the morning light, and since everything here is designed to live on Earth, it doesn’t feel any different. After washing, they went to the dining area for breakfast. After the dining car, some of them use equipment for their work, and some come to the vegetable growing area for plant cultivation. At the end of the morning, they will have lunch in batches. In the afternoon, they will manipulate the equipment for moon rock mining and water ice extraction, which they must do every day, because water and air and resources are important. After a day’s hard work, they had dinner together. At night, some of them analyze the equipment data during the day and evaluate the instrument, while some of the persons in charge report to the Earth. A meeting will then be held to arrange the next day’s work, and at the end of the meeting, everyone will be in their place and will do their part. People who do not have a duty day can go back to their room for a rest and end the day.
