Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our base camp on the Moon will be for three or four people. Its mission will be to polish the ways of obtaining oxygen and food outside the Earth so in this way it will be easier for us to settle on Mars. It will also allow you to test psychology of people who will potentially fly and colonize the red planet one day.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

The base camp will be built on the South Pole of the Moon, due to the large amount of sunlight in this area, so we won’t have to worry about power energy. In the area,  there is ice in the bottoms of  craters, which we hope to be suitable for processing and consumption. There are also ores that can be processed.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

The process of building  the base camp will be divided into two parts. First of all, mining robots will make a hole in the ground and create some kind of cave. Then, they will set up solar panels and containers for ice and necessary cables and pipes will be pulled inside the cave. Secondly, astronauts will arrive with inflated domes to set them up, all they have to do is to flood inside the walls with water which will be waiting for them in the tanks. The second step will not last longer than 4 hours.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Due to the fact that  meteorites  can hit and destroy our compound, the base camp will be built underground, so meteorites will not be able to do anything to it. Unfortunately, the solar panels will have to stay on the surface of the Moon but we will have a lot of spare parts to repair them if something happens to them. Another problem is radiation and to protect the astronauts from it we put water in the walls of compound.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Water will be extracted from the bottom of craters in the form of ice, and then placed in the special containers where the ice will turn into liquid.

Soil will be brought from the Earth and botanists will grow vegetables and fruit in it.

Electricity for the camp will be produced by solar panels placed around the camp, which will convert the rays o sunlight into power energy. In the future, we can build a nuclear reactor.

At the beginning, oxygen will be imported from Earth. Water will be electrolyzed to obtain
oxygen. We will also electrolyse water which we obtain by melting ice from the Moon. Nitrogen will have to be imported from Earth.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

The main task of our base is to prepare and test our ability to self-sufficient life in space.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

The morning for astronauts would start like on the Earth, i.e. a morning toilet, etc., and having breakfast together. Over the next hour, crew will have time to prepare for their duties which will be depended on their qualifications. After some time, if the temperature outside is right, someone from the crew will be able to collect the ice which the mining robots will be extracting or make necessary repairs. And those who stay in the compound can focus on their duties such as developing a hydro farm. In the afternoon, after the second meal, they will have time for themselves, that is, for instance talking with their relatives on the Earth, chatting, playing chess. In the evening, each crew member will have to do physical exercises such as running on a treadmill or lifting dumbbells. After evening toilet by the end of the day, they will have time for themselves, i.e. reading books or board games. We will be so kind and give the crew access to the Internet with Earth resources so  astronauts will be able to watch VOD movies. At the end of the day, after brushing  teeth the crew members will find comfortable beds.
