Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon camp project will be mainly focused on the research of the Moon and its water. There will be five astronauts send to the base (2 scientists, 2 technicians and the crew captain). Astronauts will live there and they will complete their tasks for fifty days, then they will return back to the Earth and there will be a new crew created. Our base will provide the astronauts with enough comfort and mainly safety, so they can fully focus on the research, and simultaneously expand and upgrade the base. It could possibly grow like ISS and it can be a very important stop on the way to the Mars and on the missions to explore the universe.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

The base will be located on the north pole of the Moon, near a big crater, where the astronauts will have great access to the frozen water. The sunlight is also very important, and it will be there all the time, so it can be used for harvesting the solar energy.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

The base will be mainly under the surface, where it is the safest place for the astronauts. There will be all the living and social spaces, labs and even the greenhouse. Only the solar panels, generator and the 4 elevator shafts will be above the surface. All the spaces will be inflated with air and supported by folding construction. The construction will be made of the steel and the inflating part will contain kevlar fibers.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

The most important parts of the base will be under the surface, so the astronauts will be very well protected. There will be also enough of the emergency exits. The astronauts will have enough food and water supplies in case of the emergency and there will also be the backup generators. Each astronaut will also have an air face mask with enough oxygen if it would be needed.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

The biggest part of the water sources will come from the ice from the crater near the base, the water will be cleared and analysed, the water sources for the emergency situations will be there for up to ten days. If it will be necessary, the water can be imported with some of the food supplies from the Earth.

The astronauts will try to plant part of their food sources in the greenhouse of our base, which will be located under the surface like the rest of the base. So there will be special lights that will substitute the sunlight. But most of the supplies will come from Earth in pilotless modules in regular cycles.

The power will be gained from the solar panels, which will be placed above the base together with the generator. We would like to build a nuclear reactor later, so the solar panels would become backup sources. Our rovers will be powered by the solar panels, or by the hydrogen motors which will use the hydrogen from the water electrolysis.

The oxygen will be gained from the water electrolysis, the water for this process will be obtained from the crater near the base. Of course there will be backup tanks with oxygen, so in the case of any malfunction the base should be independent for at least two days, and each astronaut will have their air mask with several oxygen tanks for up to 3 days.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

The main purpose of our base is a research of the Moon´s water and its surface. It could be an important stop on the way to the Mars, for example for fuel refill. Also, there could be some experiments with radiation. We will also monitor the influence of the Moon on the minds and bodies of the astronauts.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

The day of the astronauts will start at seven o´clock, they will have time for hygiene and some breakfast and then there is the first important task of the day, checking all the devices and the gauges. Then they will start to complete their individual tasks, the scientists will work on the research and they will also take care of the plants in the greenhouse, technicians will take care of all the devices and they will also make some research trips in the rovers. The crew captain will monitor the whole crew and the performance of their tasks, he will communicate with a team on the Earth, and he will also be a doctor for medicanal purposes. The astronauts will meet up and eat their lunch together, which could be a key moment for the crews good relationships. Then they will have some free time for example for the communication with their families on the Earth. Then there will be a collective meeting of the crew, where the captain will give the crew members new tasks, after he had a meeting with the Earth team. In the evening, after all the crew members complete their tasks, they will meet up again for dinner, after which there will be half an hour of mandatory exercising, so the astronauts don´t lose too much of their body mass. Then there will be preventive control of the crew members by the doctor. Then the astronauts will have some free time, in which they can play some collective games in the social spaces. They will go to sleep at ten o´clock, so they will have enough sleep and energy for the next day.
