Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We will analyse the electronic part of nanotechnology, which is a technological branch that manipulates the molecular structure of materials to alter their intrinsic properties in order to obtain others with revolutionary applications. Due to the many difficulties encountered, we will present various solutions to mitigate these adversities and thus ensure the survival of the astronaut team. Nanotechnology is used in the modernisation of sectors of industry and technology such as farming, medicine and communication. five floors under the surface level, containing on the lower floor the dorm room, on the next one the kitchen, the gym and then the place in which the astronauts will produce water that they will use in their everyday needs followed by the communication level. The garage, in which the vehicles will be stored, will be located on the upper level, beeing the main focus of one of them to collect ice, and robots for the recognition of the lunar territory. On the surface of the moon there will be a dome where plants will be cultivated for oxygen and food supply for the team of astronauts. This dome will consist of metal tubes from lunar modules that were left behind in previous missions such as Apollo and Luna, there will also be brought 3D printed glass from the Earth so that it’s easier and cheaper to produce.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We are going to build our camp in a vertical lava tunnel, such as those that are in the core of the moon, having been formed by volcanic eruptions. We intend to build here in order to save time and resources, since it will not be necessary to dig a hole to protect the astronauts from asteroids and radiation. The camp will be constructed in the south pole because in this area the moon has a lot of water.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

To make and maintain a lunar camp we will need various instruments, not all of which are possible to transport to the moon. Therefore, we will have to choose what we feel is indispensable and find a way to produce what else is needed.. On the moon it is important to take a 3D printer to build everything that is needed. We will certainly need filaments for the 3D printer; electrical wires, a giant graphene battery that will serve as a power supply for everything that needs energy. Additionally we will take  fertile soil so as to be able to initially grow plants in a lunar environment. Also we will need telecommunications equipment to be able to communicate with Earth through nano processors thus reducing weight and increasing efficiency. kitchen equipment (cooker, dishwasher…); Led lamps to illuminate the satellite (sent from the Earth); solar panels to charge the base’s battery; food have nano-tags to inform the astronauts about the quality of the aliments,  it will be consumed mainly in the initial phase while there is no food grown and which will serve as a reserve; algae to be used for planting and producing oxygen; telecommunications antenna, filters for producing oxygen from the soil, motors to be used in the vehicles and robots.

The construction will be started by robots and the humans only go to the camp when this be finished.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

For protect our astronauts the camp will be constructed underground and, in the surface, only will stay the garage, the plantation and the antenna for communications. To protect the astronauts the suit already have the conditions to protect from the radiation, and in the camp the fact of it constructed underground is for that. The camp will have constant vigilance for the meteors and any situation of bigger danger it will be communicated to the NASA, they launch a rocket to destroy the meteor.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

We are going to use the urine system developed by NASA and SpaceX to recycle all water. But this system is not sufficient to produce all the water that they need because have lost. So, we will remove the ice with one car on surface or depth that can preserve that ice. On camp the ice will be unfreeze with the solar light and filtrate for that the astronauts can drink.

Initially, products made in which the conservation method has very innovative characteristics based on nanotechnology will be used. Products stored in packaging, with nano tags, will be taken, in which it will be possible to see in the long term when the food is deteriorated by changing the color of the label.

The nanotechnology has new means to get and storage energy so we are going to use solar panels for getting energy from sun. The battery of graphene will storage all the energy because is lighter, more efficient and costs less.

The camp will have two means to get oxygen for astronauts. One of them is the electrolysis from a part of water collected, the oxygen will go to the astronauts and the hydrogen to the cars. Another mean is from the caption of carbon dioxide that goes to the plantation were the photosynthesis and the oxygen produce will be reconducted to the camp.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

The purpose of our Moon Camp will be scientific to the man can study the life outside of earth and developed means that can support life in other planets, for one day that earth can´t support more life, open a new hope to the continuation of the specie human in other place. We hope that the astronauts found a news technic of building, produce air and water in a different environment that we are costumed.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

The day will be started at eight all week. First our astronauts will take her breakfast. After that they will do maintenance to the robots because they will help the astronauts in the tasks of the camp like check all the camp, the communications, plantation, the maintenance in the cars, check the quality of the air in camp and if it´s not dangerous. The robots will collect the ice in the poles and the humans will staying in the camp controlling the robots remotely; after that they return the water will be subject to unfreeze and filtration. This is going to occupy all the morning because these processes is very long, so they will take her lunch and rest a little before they started the experiments. After the experiences are complete. At seven p.m. they can go have a dinner, and report to the earth the discoveries of their experiments. After they can rest one more time and do what they want before go to bed.
