Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon camp purpose is for scientific research and is made to be inhabited not only by machines, but also humans. The base is designed to access local resources such as ice water, metals and other resources which may be used to expand the base, allowing a larger crew.

The base will be built from 9 hexagonal domes made out of aluminium, to make it easier to transport to the Moon. The domes will be connected through tunnels, which will also be made out of aluminium. In the exterior of the base we will have solar panels, rovers and a big mirror for melting the ice without using to much power.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Our base will be located inside of the Peary Crater (88.5 ° N, 30 ° E), located in the North Pole region. Even though this crater is mostly dark, scientists have found that there are small portions almost always lit, which makes the temperature relatively constant and the space base supplied with an important source of energy. Very close to the location of our base there are several craters and dark places with extremely low temperatures, the most favorable places to find ice water, which will be used for drinking and as the main source of oxygen.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

For the initial construction of the base we would send parts via payload rockets. Those parts will be used to build different structures and vehicles. The base will be made out of hexagonal aluminium domes (to maintain strength)  which will be connected via cylindrical tunnels also made of aluminium. The walls will be thicker to ensure the stability of the base.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

The base will be underneath the surface of the moon to protect the crew from exposure to radiation. It will have a constant level of oxygen and humidity. We want to make sure that our crew’s mental health does not deteriorate, so we would let them speak to their families everyday. Each crew member is allowed to carry 1.5 kilograms of personal belongings (objects that won’t take too much space). Exercise machines will make sure that the crew’s muscles and bones don’t become too weak due to a lack of gravity.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

The food will be grown in hydroponics bays by botanists. We would grow soya beans as a source of protein and fats, potatoes and Brussel sprouts for carbohydrates and as a source of vitamins. We also plan to build an aquaponic system in order to try to raise fish. Vitamin D will be taken in the form of suplements. The base will have a small kitchen where the crew prepares and deposit their food.

Our base will use 2 sources of energy. The main one is through solar panels. They will be the only source of energy in lunar day. When lunar night comes, if the energy stored from the solar panels isn’t enough, we will electrolyse the water in order to use hydrogen fuel cells. Human waste could also be turned into methane and burnt for power. During the lunar night non-vital systems will be turned off in order to reduce the energy usage.

Our main source of oxygen will be from electrolyzing the water. At first nitrogen will be transported from Earth. If we do not find nitrogen on the Moon then most likely we will have to continue to bring nitrogen from Earth. From human waste, we can also gain small amounts of nitrogen. We will also bring oxygen from Earth to have in case of any problems.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

Project Future is a scientific camp. The research can be used in the future to learn how to make a bigger, self-sustained base.We plan to expand our moon base using metals or other materials found on the Moon. If we would not find such materials, we can use regolith to make bricks in order to build new buildings. In the future we plan to expand the number of crew members. The astronauts will explore the Moon and perform various experiments in order to investigate the possibility of creating a permanent colony.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Everytime at least 4 members of the group will be awake in case an emergency occurs. They will start their day by eating and exercising to wake up their muscles.

Every crew member has different roles. The botanists have to make sure that the plants and the fish are healthy and are growing as fast as possible. The engineers will make sure that everything within and outside of the base works accordingly and will have to make plans in order to expand the base. The scientis will conduct science experiments to increase our understanting of the Moon. The scientists and engineers will also make sure that the base always has enough oxygen and water. The rover drivers will try to collect as much water and materials as possible in order to make oxygen, fuel and water.
