Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon camp will be the beginning of the moon colonization, which will be the first step for developing commercial, scientific and tourism fields. The main purposes of our moon camp will be 1) convert solar energy by Solar Power Satellites (SPS) into microwaves and send that microwaves into a beam to a receiving antenna on the Earth for conversion to ordinary Electricity. Which will give us a great possibility in order to use the moon as the alternative energy source for the Earth. 2) Putting a telescope on the moon would be a great idea depending on the moon’s flat atmosphere. we’ll have the potential for extreme image sharpness which will help us to find better places for colonizing other planets around the galaxy. Our camp will be situated in the lava tubes near Philolaus crater which is near to the North pole. This kind of place will help us to protect our crew and the whole camp from dangerous environments such as radiation, temperature, moonquakes and asteroids.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Our moon base will be close to the north pole, we consider this location to be the best, because near the north pole there are some of the hugest craters, which bottoms are full of iced water, that can be mined out of the craters and brought back to base. We have decided to build our camp in the permanently shadowed Philolaus Crater, as it is known for possible Lava Tube Skylights, which seems the best solution to protect the crew from solar radiation and other danger, also skylights and lava tubes will provide more direct access to the very cold polar underground, alleviating the need to excavate vast amounts of lunar regolith

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

We decided to make our 3D printer on earth and then we will bring it on the moon where we can print smaller printers in order to finish building on time. Also, we want to use materials which can be provided from the moon such as regolith Which will be used as a main material for building the base. Telescopes need mirrors and we are able to create a moondust mirror on the moon, using moon resources. In order to build a Hubble-sized (2.4 m) mirror we’ll need: 600 kg moondust (Regolith); 60 kg epoxy; 6 kg of carbon nanotubes; less than a gram of aluminum 89.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Our team decided to build the moon camp inside the lava tubes which are situated in the North pole, these lava tubes protect us from every kind of danger such as Hazardous winds, solar radiation, moonquakes, temperature, asteroids and others. Despite this fact we still decided to make one layer in the ground which will strengthen protecting the moon base.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

The best way will be extracting water from the bottoms of the nearest lunar craters. The ice will be mined and stored in radial detachable tanks. After the tanks will be on the base, during the process we will use the technique of Thermal mining, As the ice melts, water will sink to the bottom of the tanks. And it will flow down buried pipes, into the station to make the water usable in the base. Also, we will use urine in order to make reusable water for food.

we will build a special greenhouse, which will grow plants without soil(in 2 weeks) with an 18-foot-long tube that contains water-cooled sodium vapor lamps and “envelopes” to hold the seeds. Our system will work by feeding carbon dioxide into the greenhouse through pressurized tanks. At the lunar base astronauts will provide carbon dioxide by breathing, and water for the plants could be extracted from their urine. Sunlight could be channeled to the underground plants through fiber optic cables. We will grow soy beans with 40% protein, vitamins K1, B1, B9. Sweet potatoes with vitamins B1, B6. Buffalo gourds with 35% protein, vitamin A, C, B1, B2, B3, B9. Teosinte with vitamins B, E, K.

1) we will use lunar solar power as a main source of electricity on the moon, by converting the sun’s energy into electricity with the help of solar panels.
2) Nuclear fusion of helium-3 (3He) will be used to generate electrical power with no radioactive waste and no carbon emissions. This helium-3 will be extracted by heating the lunar dust to around 600 degrees C. we will use this kind of energy as another solution of producing electricity.
3) we also will use hydrogen received as a fuel, which can produce electricity for our camp

The best solution will be extracting oxygen from moon rock. Firstly, we must evaporate lunar soil and then we can transport O2 into the tanks. For providing o2 we will build a reactor that uses oxides in Moon rocks as the cathode in an electrochemical process to produce oxygen. we will use the design of producing oxygen, which will be made with an unreactive anode using a mixture of calcium titanate and calcium ruthenate. Because this anode barely erodes, the reaction between the oxygen ions and anode produces oxygen. We will build three one-meter-tall reactors which can generate one ton of oxygen per year on the Moon. Each ton of oxygen will require three tons of rock to produce. three reactors will require about 4.5 kilowatts of power, which will be supplied by a small nuclear reactor of 3-He

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

converting solar energy by Solar Power Satellites (SPS) into microwaves and sending that microwaves into a beam to a receiving antenna on the Earth for conversion to ordinary Electricity. SPS is a clean, large-scale, stable electric power source. Wireless Power Transmission contains microwave beams, which will be directed to any desired location on Earth surface. This beam will collect Solar Energy and convert it into Electrical Energy. It will be a new renewable energy source. This project will also attract a great number of investors.

Putting a telescope on the moon would be a great idea depending on the moon’s flat atmosphere. we’ll have the potential for extreme image sharpness, the entire spectrum is accessible and stars are visible day and night. Which will be the best opportunity for us to explore the galaxy in order to find better places for colonization.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.  (400 words)

The crew in the moon camp who will be astronomers, botanists, doctors, scientists will take care of the techniques on the base. After 8 hours of sleeping our stuff will wake up, take shower, have breakfast and then start working. On the base 3 botanists will be responsible for growing plants in the greenhouse (where only 2 weeks are needed to grow plants, and before that the crew will eat the special food supplies brought from the Earth.) where they will provide 21 persons with healthy food, which will be full of proteins and necessary vitamins: B1, B2, B6, B12, C, P, PP, A, D, E and K, which are responsible for healthy functioning of a human body. As having necessary supplies in case of emergency is considered to be a thoughtful idea, we will have enough equipment for an emergency situation which will be used before another crew from Earth will bring us supplies (which will need 3 days to come to the moon). Besides that, 6 scientists will be responsible for solar panels and other sources of energy on the moon: they will work on providing electricity (by solar panels, he-3 and h2) on the base and also converting solar energy into microwaves and sending that microwaves into a beam to a receiving antenna on the Earth for conversion to ordinary Electricity. Others will take care of producing energy from he-3 and h2 in order to use it as fuel (which will be used in rockets). Also, for providing oxygen and water there will be needed 3 scientists for each job, who will take care of these techniques. In order to make a telescope work and for its functioning it will need 3 astronomers who will control it. There also need 3 doctors who will be responsible for taking care of the crew’s health. The stuff will work in shifts and the one who will be able to stay on the base will exercise at the gym. After working the crew will go to control their health every day, at night after dinner they will take shower and go to sleep.
