Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description
The main purpose of our project was to build a safe scientific facility, assisted by modern technologies. Our moon camp is minimalistic and uses artificial intelligence to manage lights, energy consumption, water, and oxygen. The centre of the facility is located in the steep crater’s wall which provides additional and natural protection.
Electricity, water, oxygen, and building material will also be sourced from regolith. The only thing which would be delivered on regular basis from the Earth is food.
Our camp allows for the accommodation of two astronauts, but there is still room for expanding the facility.
The camp is composed of
– top, outdoor part: We placed there a rocket, garage for arm on the rails, two solar panel complexes with batteries and building material, water and oxygen sourcing machines.
– bottom, outdoor part: In this part, there is: one solar panel complex, a garage for various vehicles, and a rotating mirror.
– indoor part: This is the part where the astronauts spend most of their time. The indoor part is divided into six rooms, which are the following (order from left): seclusion room, biological lab, workshop combined with bedroom, locker room combined with bathroom, gym with relax area included, and decontamination chamber.
Our moon camp project is called ‘Summa LEM’, in an honor of Polish science fiction writer Stanisław Lem. This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth.
Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?
We want our base to be located near one of the poles, with a view on Earth, in the old crater. The crater with one side always sunless and one side with reaching sunlight, which would allow to find ice lumps and acquire electricity.
The residential part of the base will be located in the crater wall, which would make this part protected from radiation, overheating, and meteorite strikes.
How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.
In the beginning phase, the facility would be built with modules transported from Earth to Moon. Later, mobile 3D Printers and robots could use regolith to build residential part, solar panels, factories, and containers for ice and oxygen.
Scientists would live in the rocket before the residential part is built, and they would control the robots and vehicles remotely. After the astronauts moved inside, they would finish the details and manage the following extension of the facility and the scientific research.
The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.
The placement of the camp inside of a steep crater wall makes the interior resistant to meteorites. The walls are wide enough, to make astronauts safe from dangerous cosmic radiation.
Moving flaps on windows allow enough sunlight and warm reach inside.
If one of the crew members is sick, then this person goes to the seclusion room where he can find his water, food and medicine supply, essential electronic devices, space suits, and another exit to the top of the crater.
The decontamination chamber would protect the interior from radioactive substances and vacuum.
In case of serious breakdown, astronauts can dress up in space suits, evacuate through an emergency hatch, and get away from Moon using the rocket.
Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Water could be recovered from ice, using a rotating mirror reflecting the solar rays to heat an ice container located to the left of the seclusion room.

Food would have to be delivered from Earth on regular basis. Astronauts would also grow edible plants, raise insects, which after being cooked, would also be edible, and provide high-energy food.

Solar panels would entirely provide enough power to cover the energy consumption of the facility in the first place, and then vehicles.

Air would be recovered from water recovered from ice, regolith, second-hand air, and living organisms.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).
The main purpose of our moon camp is to create proper scientific conditions, allowing the scientists to run efficient and safe research. The scientist would be assisted by artificial intelligence and modern technologies, which would allow them to comfortably change the functionality of the camp.
Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.
Astronauts work in the same period, to prevent disturbing the daily cycle. There will also be some days, in which a schedule is completely different, for various reasons, e.g longer maintenance works, preparing the rocket for taking off.
If one of the astronauts sleeps, the second also sleeps during that time. Special lamps resembling sunlight. If sunlight is falling on the facility from a specific angle, flaps on windows move up.
Astronauts eat, wash and dress up at the beginning of the day.
Astronauts focus on their tasks, but mainly on their professions. Astronauts usually work individually, but they can help each other in their tasks. The responsibilities appertaining to the astronauts are:
– managing energy consumption, assisted by AI,
– biological research on organisms in lab,
– creating needed tools in 3D Printers,
– repairing damaged components,
– exploring the moon surface using lunar rovers or by going outside in space suits,
– maintaining and training physical condition.
Astronauts eat at least four meals a day and hydrate themselves.
Astronauts take a short break between each task or activity.
Astronauts are advised against going outside, because of the big risks that every expedition takes. On every expedition, there are going both astronauts. After they come back, they go into the decontamination chamber and wait there, to make sure their suits are sterile and the air is pumped into the chamber.
If astronauts did all of the given tasks, they can relax afterward. In their free time, Astronauts can read a book, play board games, watch a movie talk with their relatives on video chat, train even more, or even engage in making art.
Astronauts end their day eating their last meal and taking a shower.
