Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The main purpose of our site is tourism. It is divided into three modules: living area, energy harvesting area and tourism punch card area.

The living area is mainly semi-underground. Using the small gravity, the living room is embedded in the rock wall of the pit, providing a more humanized private space for tourists. The underground part includes scientific research experiment area, ecological planting area, dining and fitness area, entertainment area, and the above part is equipped with a front desk, intelligent robots and intelligent rest room.

The energy harvesting area includes solar panels and energy storage batteries.

A fixed cable car will transport visitors to the tourist check-in area, which includes a flight experience room and an astronomical observatory.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Inside a crater near the moon’s South Pole (81.5S, 14.9E).The mountains in the moon’s polar region are in sunlight about 70 to 80 percent of the time, providing ample energy for the lunar base. Plenty of water exists in the permanently Shadowed area of the South Pole, where the camp can easily detect and collect water from the moon (which melts the ice by concentrating light through a multi-sided concave lens) for tourists.

In a lunar year, the average number of days of illumination at malaport ring peak point in the South Pole is 56% and 95% respectively, and a large earth-to-earth communication center can be constructed.

There is no signal shielding area on the back of the mountain, which is not affected by the Earth all year round, and can be used for deep space astronomical observation, which meets the needs of tourism and viewing.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

Most of the building materials will be obtained from the lunar soil through 3D printing technology. We will make nano silica in the lunar laboratory, carry a small amount of aerogel from the Earth, and make a film layer with nano silica and aerogel inside the building shell to reduce the impact of outdoor temperature and radiation on the interior.

The living area is mainly semi-underground, sealed by a large polyethylene air bag. The purifier with unicorn beetle folding mechanism is used to ensure the air quality in the confined space. The above-ground part is a hemispherical structure, while the underground part adopts honeycomb structure, using the cliff to establish a small independent space.

The acquisition of electric energy using a foldable omnidirectional solar photovoltaic device can not only fully capture solar energy and convenient folding. The energy is stored in batteries and buried underground, and transported to living and tourist areas by underground cables. Tourists rely on cable cars as transportation tools to travel to higher mountains for sightseeing. In the transportation process, we will use intelligent temperature controlled cold chain transportation system to improve operation efficiency.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)
  1. Establish a regional missile defense system, satellite observation network and phased array radar network, and carry out all-round defense on meteorites of all sizes at multiple scales and levels.
  2. Large meteorites use missiles to offset their orbits, while small meteorites need laser arrays to provide comfortable temperature environment for tourists.
  3. Thick lunar soil and polyethylene air bags help tourists resist radiation.
  4. Indoor air circulation system and humidification device provide tourists with fresh air and appropriate humidity.
2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

Because of the relationship between temperature and angular velocity near the pole, there is water in the ground near the pole.
1.Exploitation of underground water resources for the residents of the base.
2.It can be exploited as agricultural and industrial water, which greatly reduces the use cost of water resources.

1.More than 100 kinds of plants have been successfully cultivated in space, such as wheat, barley and corn, as well as algae such as laver, which cover a small area and have strong photosynthesis.
2.Carry compressed dried meat, eggs and other earth foods to supplement protein.

1. There is plenty of light in the highlands of the lunar polar mountains, which converts solar energy into electric energy and stores it by batteries.
2. In addition, lunar soil contains more oxygen and metal elements, which can provide people with the necessary energy for production and life through purification and chemical reaction.

1. Carry nitrogen and oxygen from the earth. Hydrogen is used to reduce ilmenite (Fe2TiO5 or FeTiO3) to produce oxygen.
2. Use the photosynthesis of plants.
3. Mining Antarctic ice, melting and electrolyzing water to generate oxygen.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

Our moon camp is mainly for tourism. With the improvement of the quality of life, more and more people want to go to space to have a look. In the near future, space tourism may no longer be out of reach, and ordinary people can strive to go to space to overlook the whole earth. Here, you can not only enjoy the comfort of the earth, but also experience the novelty of the moon. You won’t feel uncomfortable because of the difference of the earth, and only bring you a wonderful experience.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

In the morning, the tourist wake up in their sleeping bags, wash in a small wall compartment, and then take an elevator to the cafeteria for dinner. After, take the elevator came to the middle experimental ecological layer, take sampling tools, wear good suit on top, take a lunar rover sampling, then travelled to soil experimental area decomposition, biome to watch space plants, plant leaves collected in the sampling area, can make the people who do not do research work also can experience the fun of scientific research, take the elevator to the dining hall at noon, Our vending machines offer a wide variety of food and drinks, and you can also make your own.

In the afternoon, go to the entertainment floor to experience different entertainment with your friends, then go to the gym for fitness, or take the cable car to the Flying Pavilion to enjoy the scenery. At night, go to the top of a nearby mountain to observe space with a telescope, or if you are lucky, watch the sunrise or sunset. After returning to the living area, if you feel tired, you can relax in the lounge area on the top floor, or go to the entertainment floor to relax by watching a movie, playing the piano, reading a book, playing chess, or playing ball games.

When you go to sleep at night, try the projector in your room and turn on your favorite mode. It will introduce stars known to mankind. Maybe you can find your favorite one.
