Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our lunar camp plan is to build a tourism base at the north pole of the moon. Tourists can visit the scenic spots on the moon, as well as the museums, oxygen production bases, planting bases and so on. Here, visitors can learn about the characteristics of our camp, experience interesting balloon restaurants and watch the beautiful and wonderful moon. We will also have special vehicles and corresponding protection measures to guide tourists to visit the famous scenic spots of the moon, such as Copernicus crater, Pico mountain, alpine Grand Canyon, straight wall, etc. Through our efforts, we hope that tourists can have a happy and leisurely time in our lunar camp.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

The lunar camp of our group is planned to be built in the north pole of the moon, where it is convenient to transmit signals with the earth, and the terrain there is relatively flat, which is conducive to the take-off and landing of lunar spacecraft; Some areas in the north and south poles of the moon are close to the permanent irradiation of the sun, which can collect solar energy and use it. Where the sun cannot shine, there is water ice, which can provide water resources. As the moon sea is mostly concentrated in the Arctic, the Arctic is a good choice.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

It is very difficult to transport building materials to the moon, so we plan to take local materials from the moon, operate with more mature 3D printing technology, and print balloon restaurants with glass as materials. The delicate soil and lead containing materials on the lunar surface are used as materials for other buildings, and the unmanned technology is used to control the mining vehicle for resource collection. Build solar panels to collect solar energy and convert it into electric energy to provide electricity. However, soil alone may not guarantee the firmness of the lunar base. The weathering layer on the lunar surface has similar chemical composition to fly ash, which means that geopolymer is a very attractive building material on the moon, but it requires a lot of water. Urea can play the same effect as high-grade water reducer, and urea is relatively easy to obtain, which can be collected by filtering the waste in astronauts’ urine.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

Without the protection of the atmosphere and magnetic field, the radiation of the moon is relatively high, and astronauts living in lunar camps will face the risk of radiation. On the one hand, we will set the lunar landing years of astronauts and tourists in the lunar camp to be less than or equal to two years, so as to avoid long-term stay and expose their bodies to high doses of radiation. On the other hand, in the construction of the lunar camp, we will use lead-containing materials that can prevent radiation to build the tourist houses, so as to reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases caused by astronauts and tourists traveling and living on the moon, and make astronauts live in the lunar camp safer and better as far as possible. The most important thing is that we have a shelter that can avoid emergency danger.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

In the early stage, astronauts can use some of the water resources on earth. In the later stage, on the one hand, our base is built in a location rich in a large amount of lunar ice, from which we can extract water and use professional equipment for disinfection to convert it into drinkable water resources, which will be transported to various buildings through a special water circulation system, and there will also be the reuse of waste water. On the other hand, we will realize the storage of water resources for normal use, It can also be used in emergencies, so as to reduce the burden on the moon as much as possible.

Like water resources, in the early stage, we will focus on the food brought from the earth. At the same time, we will cultivate plants in the greenhouse. In the later stage, the main food for astronauts and tourists comes from the greenhouse. Of course, even if it may be difficult to obtain food, we will match it reasonably to maintain a balanced nutrition, such as cereals, fruits and vegetables, milk and meat.

According to the results of lunar exploration, the storage of helium-3 gas (He-3) on the moon is estimated to be more than 1 million tons. He-3 is recognized as an efficient, clean, safe and cheap fuel for nuclear fusion power generation in the world. The most important thing is that this gas is friendly to the environment and will not harm the moon. Therefore, we will mine the He-3 of the moon to convert it into electric energy. On the other hand, we will build solar panels on buildings as much as possible, Using solar energy to generate electricity, at the same time, we will also build mining machines to generate electricity from mines.

The moon’s abundant oxygen resources are sealed in the lunar soil, more specifically in the minerals in the hard rock dust, boulders and stones covering the lunar surface. Therefore, we will build a special oxygen generator and use these minerals to finally produce breathable oxygen on the moon. At the same time, it will be converted into air similar to the earth through the balance system and transported out for tourists to survive.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

Our lunar camp is mainly tourism. The pace of the world is becoming faster and faster. Due to the pressure of work, study and life, more and more people have no time to pay attention to the small happiness around them. Life is a little noisy and impetuous. Sometimes they even have no time to think seriously and attentively. Everyone once wanted to have a place where their hearts can be comforted, the so-called distance. As most people yearn for the “distance nearby”, it can be seen that if a tourism base is built into a place like a paradise, it will attract people. So it is more special to build such a tourism base on the moon, which can not only improve the economic development of the base, but also calm people’s mind and slowly experience life.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

When astronauts get up in the morning, they will have a centralized meal with tourists, that is, Cereals, milk from the earth or food collected from the greenhouse. Then, the first patrol of the day will be carried out to ensure that there is no emergency. Then, the astronauts will lead the tourists to visit the plant growth in the greenhouse, and can lead the tourists to pick and tell the tourists about the growth principle of lunar plants. After visiting the greenhouse, the astronauts will lead the tourists to continue to visit the mining and power generation area and the balanced oxygen production area of our base. After the lunch break, the astronauts will conduct the second patrol in a day, and then continue to drive a tourist bus to take tourists to the lunar scenic spots, the lunar Museum, as well as the characteristic control room and restaurant. After dinner, the astronauts also drove the tourists to our balloon restaurant for dinner, and then the tourists can go back to their residence to refresh themselves for the next day’s activities. So far, the day’s activities have been basically completed.
