Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

If there is only one word to describe our team’s camp, it must be flexible. Compared to traditional campgrounds, mobile campervans are small and flexible and will perform better in certain situations. For example: meteorites falling from the sky can be found and evacuated in advance; or a high-quality vein is found in the distance, which can easily take the entire base to go, which has greatly improved the scientific research environment and scientific research facilities for scientific researchers. The car contains a variety of food, water, a full set of temperature and humidity regulation system, and even a small space arranged in the green plants, to give astronauts wholehearted material supplies and humanistic care.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

As long as the landing site is flat on all sides, campervans can theoretically land in most places. However, according to actual needs, the concept of campervan creation is mainly to make it more convenient for researchers to explore the moon. Therefore, the choice of landing site should be under the premise of ensuring safety, with the value of scientific research detection as the main consideration, and as many places as possible to choose places with great scientific research value. in order to maximize its use value.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

As a separate monolithic module, campervans should be transported to the moon in the form of an integral airdrop as much as possible. The camp car is assembled on Earth, built, and launched into space by rocket to the moon, where it lands on the lunar surface. You can refer to China’s “Jade Rabbit” lunar expedition vehicle. The camper’s exterior uses key materials such as thermal control coating, refractory alloy high-temperature oxidation-resistant coating, high-friction anti-cold welding coating, high-temperature heat insulation screen, flexible film thermal control coating and low-temperature multi-layer insulation components, which can effectively overcome the heat generated when landing on the moon, protect the camper vehicle shape from being destroyed and maintain a constant temperature inside the vehicle. At the same time, the use of high-efficiency energy-absorbing alloys can greatly buffer off the impact caused by landing, reduce the damage to the car body, and according to the scientific and technological development in the next five years, other materials with more prominent performance may be selected for substitution.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

The interior of the camper is a fully enclosed structure, which is comparable to that of the reinforced bulletproof armored vehicle, and can effectively isolate most of the space radiation; the “black and white suit” made of organic thermal control coating includes a “white coat” worn on the surface of the camper, which has a low heat absorption rate and high reflectivity, reducing the impact of sunlight exposure; “black underwear” is worn on the inner wall of the lunar rover, and its heat absorption rate is high and the reflectivity is also high, ensuring that the interior is maintained at a suitable temperature. This can deal with most of the crises on the moon, and for large disasters like meteorites, campers can’t hold on, but they can run and avoid risks in advance.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

The vehicle is equipped with a water source circulation system to collect the wastewater generated in the life, recycle and treat the wastewater, and the reuse rate can reach as low as 90%. And there are cargo ships that are constantly replenished, which can fully supply the daily needs of astronauts and scientific research needs.

Due to the lack of lunar food, it is difficult to replenish in situ, and at the same time, the space limitations inside the camper car make it impossible to produce a total of food for their own use through planting, so in terms of the current reality and the level of technology, the food source inside the camper is completely dependent on the earth, and it is necessary to use the cargo spacecraft for long-distance replenishment

In terms of energy, it mainly relies on absorbing space rays to convert into energy available for use, of which solar energy accounts for 90% of the energy source, and the way to receive solar energy is to use solar panels to absorb light energy, and whenever the campervan reaches a certain place for scientific exploration or trimming, the solar folding panels located on the roof of the car will be deployed to absorb solar energy for power generation.

Electrolyzed water is mainly used to produce oxygen, and some pure oxygen cylinders and solid oxygen are always prepared in case of emergency.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

Purpose: Scientific Research and Exploration.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

In the morning, Mike woke up from his sleeping bag, unzipped and got up to wash up, threw something that looked like fudge but wasn’t sweet at all, chewed it, and wiped his face with a wet towel to finish washing. Mike then went to the cab, and admired the small green plantations along the corridor, in this lifeless moon, this small patch of green plants is precious, Mike has long been accustomed to the company of these green plants, and looking at the grass every morning and evening is one of his few ways to relax. On the way, I met Tom, who was on duty yesterday, and now he is very tired, says hello to Mike and goes to sleep in the lounge. Arriving at the cab, Mike expertly opened the console, retracted the solar folding panel and started the vehicle. Today, they are going to return, to a crater twelve kilometres away, and a week ago the satellite detected that a meteorite would soon land on the site of the camp, and for safety reasons, the camp moved more than ten kilometres away to wait for the crisis to pass. Near noon, I finally returned to the place where I had been stationed, but now it was completely unrecognizable, and countless meteorites and the debris after the explosion smashed the place to pieces, Mike thought: Fortunately, there is a lunar camper provided by Dytlj, otherwise I am afraid that I will lose my life.
