Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

In the project of the lunar base, the base is mainly divided into two parts: above ground and underground. The interior is kept closed and constant temperature. The above ground buildings are mainly composed of planting base, gym, cinema, main control room, Ferris wheel sleeping cabin and space elevator. There is a lunar rover outside the base; Underground buildings are devices for making water and oxygen, as well as water reservoirs and water purifiers to meet the daily water needs of astronauts. In the above ground part, the moon room is our general control room, which is used for astronauts to monitor whether various base data are normal. The experimental area is used for astronauts to study the collected samples and plant gene mutations after radiation. The gym allows astronauts to exercise in space to prevent muscle atrophy. There is also the ferris wheel sleeping module, which allows astronauts to watch the scenery from different angles and then go to sleep. Due to the shortage of energy on the moon, we will use folding solar power to supply power to all equipment that need electricity, and equip satellite radar to contact the earth to ensure stable communication, so as to ensure the personal safety of astronauts on the lunar base.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We plan to build the lunar camp near the lunar pole. The lunar pole is the easiest place to obtain solar energy, which can solve the shortage of energy. There is a large amount of frozen ice at the lunar pole, which can solve the shortage of water resources. At the same time, we can also obtain places with more lunar soil ore resources through topographic survey, which is conducive to the construction of things needed by subsequent astronauts and the development of other resources.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

In the construction of lunar camps, we use rigid flexible mixing technology and molten oxygen technology to produce oxygen, including electrified electrolysis technology, high-temperature sintering lunar soil technology, aerogel insulation technology, high-tech intelligent technology and so on. In terms of materials for the construction of lunar camps, we obtain the soil on the moon by mining the natural rocks and soil layers on the moon. Then the lunar soil is sintered into ceramic materials as the supporting structure of house construction. The other side also uses the way of heating heat to make it into a molten state, which plays the role of sealing the house.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

In order to prevent solar flares and cosmic ray radiation on the moon, a protective layer is built on the outermost layer. This protective layer is made of materials that can resist solar flares and cosmic ray radiation, which can expand the territory and protect against external natural hazards. We can overcome the extreme temperature of the moon by using the thermal insulation of aerogels. There is no oxygen in the moon. We produce oxygen through melting oxygen production technology, which has high efficiency and little pollution. Building planting bases on the surface of the moon and exchanging materials between the earth and the moon through space elevators to supplement the needs of food and other resources, so that astronauts can eat the same delicious food on the moon as on earth.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

We plan to heat the lunar soil in a furnace, vaporize the soil under the high temperature conditions in the presence of hydrogen and methane, and directly transition the oxygenated minerals from solid state to gaseous state, bypassing the melting stage. These gases and residual methane are then sent to a catalytic converter and a condenser, which separates liquid water from the mixture, and the remaining hydrogen and methane can be recycled in the system. Or use the frozen ice near the lunar pole to obtain liquid water by melting, and then use the water purifier to obtain purified water.

The lunar soil itself does not contain organic matter, and the temperature difference of the moon is extremely extreme, which is not suitable for plant growth. However, we can build an artificial climate chamber to maintain constant temperature, artificially improve the lunar soil, add organic matter to the lunar soil, and then provide water, oxygen and sunlight. In this way, plants can also grow on the moon to obtain food. At the same time, the space elevator can be used. Astronauts can get materials from the earth through the space elevator to supply food and other needs that cannot be obtained on the moon.

We use multiple foldable solar energy to collect sunlight and supply it to the places where energy is needed in all aspects of daily power supply of astronauts’ life, and it can be closed when it is not used at night. It is not only environmentally friendly but also economical. It is one of the prerequisites for astronauts to live a better life on the moon.

The device for making oxygen is the same as the device for making water. The liquid water obtained from the vaporized gas of lunar soil through the catalytic converter and condenser is transported by electrolysis to obtain oxygen for the life activities of astronauts, so that astronauts can travel on the moon without pressure.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

Let astronauts travel freely on the moon, create a comfortable and novel lunar tourism camp, and make life on the moon full of fun with various facilities with a sense of science and technology. It can not only make astronauts who come to scientific research or astronauts who come to the moon to live on the moon have a more unique experience, but also “break through the limit” to enhance astronauts’ life experience and lunar experience.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

In the morning, the astronauts woke up from the beautiful Ferris wheel sleeping cabin. After eating, they began a wonderful day of travel on the moon. In the morning, first of all, astronauts can go to the main control room, which controls the normal operation of the lunar camp, to ensure that everything works well. Then you can go and see what it seems that the traveling scientists and astronauts are studying in the laboratory. In the afternoon, the astronauts came to the planting base where all kinds of vegetables and fruits were planted to see if they were growing well. Then go to the advanced gym to experience extreme sports on the moon and prevent astronauts from muscle atrophy. In the evening, you can have leisure and entertainment. Go to the cinema to see a favorite movie. When astronauts feel tired, you can bring an eye massage to relieve visual fatigue. At night, inside the oxygen mask built on the moon, you can walk around and enjoy the different scenery on the moon. What a full and beautiful day.
