Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

THE TREE is the first self-sufficient large-scale space transfer station for mankind. It not only ensures its self-operation, but also serves as a space transfer station to pave the way for human beings to live on Mars in the future, provide midway fuel supplement for rocket launch between earth and Mars, and study the lunar surface.

The main part of the camp has three areas (storage area, work and supply area and living area), and each area also has three upper and lower floors. As Chinese Lao Tzu said, “Tao generates one, two generates two, two generates three, and three generates all things.” It has one floor above the ground and two floors underground. Most of the materials of the camp come from the local moon. At the same time, we have two transport vehicles (specially for transporting fuel when the rocket stops), one damage excavation vehicle (destroyer), two automatic Rovers and two acquisition vehicles to assist the astronauts in their work.

The construction of the base is divided into three stages, which is transported by ESA, NASA and CNSA rockets, thus opening the prelude to our camp.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We will build a lunar base near the north pole of the moon. The reasons are as follows: 1 The polar region of the moon is exposed to sunlight for about 70% ~ 80% of the time, and the solar cell can provide sufficient power for the lunar base; 2. The temperature difference in the polar region is small, and a large number of moon seas are distributed. The terrain is relatively wide and flat, which is conducive to the take-off and landing of spacecraft; 3. Most countries are located in the northern hemisphere, and the communication between the moon and the Arctic is more convenient; 4. Water ice lurks in many places near the lunar polar region, which are permanently in the shade and can provide sufficient water for the lunar base.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

The construction of the lunar camp is divided into three stages. The first stage is the preparation stage. The 3D printer, destroyer and other equipment are sent to the lunar camp to build a temporary camp and prepare for the lunar camp. The raw materials for 3D printing come from calcium, aluminum and other elements on the lunar soil, resulting in cement with high hardness and strength. In the second stage, some astronauts and equipment will be sent to the camp, the infrastructure of the lunar camp will be constructed, the plants will be transplanted to the special area, and the relevant survival equipment will be inspected and repaired. When survival is no longer a problem, the last batch of astronauts and equipment will take rockets to the lunar camp for final construction. At the same time, the functionality of the lunar camp will be added, and the temporary camp will be moved to an empty shell (for connection).

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

Our lunar camp is first built in the low-lying part of the lunar impact crater, which can effectively reduce the probability of being hit by meteorites; Secondly, the building materials in the base mainly use new composite materials, which are spherical in shape, which can well adapt to the high-temperature environment on the lunar surface and help astronauts resist some cosmic rays. At the same time, the outer wall of the building will have two layers, and a protective layer (a new material) will be paved in the middle to resist strong gamma radiation. At the same time, the accommodation area is underground to minimize the radiation risk, At the same time, there is an emergency refuge area at the bottom of the storage area, which adopts Taiji shape to strengthen its firmness (also part of the residential area).

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

When the first astronauts arrive, they will bring some water resources with them. Until the supply area is completed, they can dig water sources in the nearby meteorite crater. At the same time, the camp provides water supply through the physicochemical regeneration system. In the camp, the water vapor exhaled by astronauts can be collected through the condensation and drying components, and the domestic wastewater can be converted into reclaimed water for drinking and use through the purification device, At the same time, there will also be hydrogen and oxygen water generator (used when there is no shortage of water or when there is no shortage of oxygen after the camp construction is completed).

In the early stage, astronauts need to provide their own food, but because of the self supply of the camp, a large planting area will be specially built for the planting of vegetables, cereals and herbs. High yield seeds will be selected and carried to the camp. At the same time, the planting area realizes the integration of intelligent monitoring and management, and the relevant temperature, humidity and light can be adjusted in the control area to meet the most suitable conditions for plant growth.

There will be some solar panels around the camp to use the solar energy absorbed by them. Some will be used to supply the indoor heat energy, and some will be converted into electric energy for use. Of course, there will also be photovoltaic resistance cells for power generation. In the later stage, the camp will build a nuclear fusion Laboratory for the use of energy in the camp.

Similarly, at the beginning, astronauts will carry enough oxygen and nitrogen, and the electrolytic oxygen generation system in the camp can use circulating water to produce oxygen by electrolysis. In addition, carbon dioxide can be purified in the space station cabin, so that the enriched carbon dioxide can react with the hydrogen produced by electrolytic water to obtain considerable oxygen, improve the closed-loop degree of material utilization, greatly reduce the dependence on rocket transportation and improve the economy.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

Business: the camp has an exclusive rocket landing and launching pad, with a freely retractable mechanical arm on it for simple repair and fueling of the rocket.

Science: the camp also has a special laboratory for studying plants, animals, materials and materials on the surface and deep of the moon. At the same time, it also has a fully enclosed glass roof for observing space.

Tourism: the camp can provide short stay for tourists to and from the moon.

The main purpose of the camp is to launch exploration rockets to Mars to pave the way for human migration to Mars and become the link between the earth, Mars and the solar system.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

The daily work of our base personnel will start from the living area, where they will complete washing, breakfast and other activities. It’s eight o’clock, and all the staff will arrange a one-day task with the earth control center. After that, our scientists and engineers will go to the Research Institute and supply room through the corridor bridge, where scientists will conduct lunar related research, and engineers will check the supply of water, electricity, oxygen and other necessary resources and adjust them in time; Another part of the engineers will go to the storage room to prepare fuel for the upcoming rocket. The rocket will land smoothly at 10 o’clock. The lunar personnel will have lunch with the astronauts in the restaurant while refuelling it. At 1 o’clock in the afternoon, under the command of the lunar personnel, the spacecraft will take off smoothly to other planets. At 3 pm, the staff will go to the exercise area after finishing the day’s work to avoid the decline of heart muscle mass. After an hour of exercise, the staff can move freely. They can go to the library, pick up a paper book and cultivate their soul; You can also go to the lounge and play some relaxing games with your companions; You can also go to the Botanical Museum to feel the beauty of nature and understand the feeling of thought; You can also go to the attic and indulge in the beautiful universe through the glass dome; Go to the fresh fruit planting area and pick it yourself. At 7 pm, after dinner, the staff returned to their rooms to check the mail from the earth or have a video call with their relatives. Then they bathed, changed clothes and went to bed, ending a busy but fulfilling day.
