Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The goal is to design a science-oriented, pay attention to humanistic care, the earth transport supplies, late can achieve long-term sustainable development, self-sufficient comprehensive lunar research camp, for the moon resources, lunar science and technology, and for the future into the solar system and even other planets provide springboard, lay a solid foundation. At a certain stage of development, the base can be used as a compound base of tourism scientific research to create economic value. The lunar camp construction is divided into seven parts.Equipment storage room (door), entertainment and fitness room, food and living room, bedroom bathroom, conference research headquarters, central greenhouse plants, external scientific research exploration, both Meet the requirements of daily life and entertainment, but also meet the requirements of scientific research and exploration.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We plan to build a camp near Shackleton crater at the Lunar South Pole.Because the stable temperature near the Shackleton crater in Antarctica is conducive to the needs of the astronauts; abundant sunlight reaches 80-90% for solar panels to collect energy; the permanent shadow area inside Shackleton may have abundant water ice resources for the camp.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

For the construction of our base, we plan to divide it into three stages.Phase 1: Carry the robot and build some of the materials needed to land the construction camp near Shackleton crater in Antarctica.Lunar rover after landing detection near suitable areas, local soil and urea and naphthalene based plasticizer mixed to form “moon concrete”, using 3d printing technology to build’moon concrete protective layer, using the materials and the moon, using double polyimide-mica composite film made sealed isolated protective layer to form each functional module, corridor, etc. This ensures that when the astronauts arrive, the base will be basically for the rest of the astronauts Environmental protection.Phase 2: transport in astronauts and internals and other equipment. The astronauts assembled it and connected it.Phase 3: The lunar camp is officially operated, and astronauts use earth transport equipment to collect and use lunar resources to achieve sustainable development.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

Considering the special environment of the moon, there are not only unusual temperature and radiation environment, but also micrometeorites. We plan to use lunar soil “lunar concrete” with urea and naphthalene based super plasticizer to build the base shield for cosmic radiation and extreme temperature effects, and use lunar concrete double polyimide-mica composite film to further strengthen the protection of the base and provide safe living environment for astronauts, and we will use thin shell building structure to make the overall structure of the base even more stable and Has the ability to resist micrometeorite attacks.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

We will collect water ice resources from the permanent shadow area of the Shackleton crater, and then transport them back by the carrier to the heat storage device of the base, melt the water ice and form water, and then pass the water purifier including urine and waste hydroponic plant nutrients for filtration and reuse. In this way, the base can use the water to be increased to achieve sustainable development.

Earlier, astronauts will eat foods such as meat and protein supplied from Earth.Subsequently, we will grow vegetables in greenhouse hydropics, potatoes, green peas and cabbage to obtain carbohydrates, sugar, calcium, cellulose, vitamins.During this period, we will speed up the research of lunar soil modification plan, such as the use of pioneer plant transformation, to achieve lunar soil planting, and to achieve more planting options. Then, we will use protein synthesis technology to synthesize meat proteins to reduce the cost of earth transportation.

Since Shackleton Crater sunlight reaches 80-90% all the year round, our main source of electricity will be solar panels. In normal times, we also store energy in power storage devices so that the base equipment can operate normally during no sunlight.Second, we will also try to react with the helium-3 thermonuclear and deuterium in the lunar soil to generate energy to the base for operation.

In the early stage, we will extract oxygen from the wind fossil and mix the wind fossil moon soil with calcium chloride through the high temperature environment of the heat energy storage device, thus applying a high current to produce oxygen for use. Then, with the exploitation of water ice resources and the increase of base water resources, we will use the method of electrolysis of water to obtain oxygen. As the greenhouse plants grow, the oxygen they will also be collected.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

To design the lunar camp, we give priority to scientific research experiments that are sustainable for a long time, and then provide a springboard for exploring other planets as we develop. After the normal operation of the base, we will study the lunar soil, the lunar soil transformation, and the lunar minerals, geology and other resources.Research will also be carried out on the use of lunar resources to understand the formation and available use of lunar resources to provide the possibility of interstellar exploration.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

One day on the moon is very different from that on Earth. In order not to disturb the body clock, our base will use an autonomous lighting system to simulate the day and night, so that astronauts work the same day.At 6 o’clock, the astronauts will get up from the rest module and then go to the diet module to enjoy the breakfast provided by the automatic meal machine. After the break, the astronauts will work to test the greenhouse plants, lunar soil and the operation of various equipment.Control the exploration vehicle for further exploration of the moon.At 12 o’clock, enjoy the diet module for lunch, and then go to the entertainment and fitness module for entertainment and rest.At 13:00, the astronauts will send the Send the collection vehicle out to collect the resources, and test the various equipment and storage resources of the external exploration module. Then go to the research conference module for scientific research and conference discussion. At 19:00, after enjoying dinner, continue to the research conference module for meeting discussion, arrange the specific work for tomorrow, and report the base to Earth. At 20 o’clock, the astronauts will go to the entertainment and fitness module for fitness and entertainment and other activities. At 21 o’clock, the astronauts returned to the rest module for evening hygiene and other activities, and then entered the sleep module to rest.
