Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The moon camp is located at the South Pole, making it easy for the rover to mine solid ice. To support astronauts and scientific research on the moon, the camp will be powered by solar panels during the day and storage tanks at night. Meet the demands of the atmosphere through gas production facilities and green plants. The living place can meet the astronauts to eat, sleep and entertainment activities, and the experimental place can meet the astronauts to operate the equipment of the entire lunar camp and carry out relevant scientific research experiments.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Humans need water to survive, but scientists now know that the moon has frozen water only in the permanently Shadowed regions of the north and South Poles, and even more at the South Pole. To make it easier for the rover to mine solid water, our moon camp will be built at the South Pole.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

The first is to make full use of the land, and the living area will be designed in three layers, with the bottom layer under the soil. Second is the material aspect, we use titanium alloy, moon soil contains silicate made of special concrete, save material transportation at the same time also high temperature radiation resistance; Finally, the coating material on the top of the greenhouse and in the corridor can filter the strong light and radiation, leaving the appropriate light to meet the needs.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

Lunar dust is a serious problem on the moon, and houses in the lunar camp have filtration systems to prevent humans from inhaling it. At the same time, the camp also has a perfect gas production device to prevent the blood and organs in the human body from being seriously affected by the gas problem. The gas finally produced by the gas production machine will pass through layers of filtration into the greenhouse for secondary purification, and finally into the house. In addition, in the face of the possible impact of foreign objects, the surface of the camp will be built with silicate rich in lunar soil, so as to make local materials as possible while strengthening the surface of the building.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

Water is a scarce resource on the moon. Water from the moon camp will be mined from the rover to the “permanent shadow area” at the South Pole and transported to the camp’s water storage tower. Energy storage devices will be used to convert the water into liquid water, which will be filtered and sent to the living area to meet astronauts’ water needs.

For vegetables, use greenhouses to grow plants or fungi that are easy to support. In terms of meat, artificial meat can be synthesized with protein, fat and sodium in proportion to human needs through the food synthesizer equipped with plant-based protein-simulated animal meat automatic matching and rapid synthesis system in the restaurant area, and delicious food can also be cooked by manual or machine automation.

There are two ways of generating energy: solar and nuclear. Solar energy is provided by a number of solar panels. Some of the energy is used directly during the day and the rest is transported to the storage tower for use at night. Nuclear energy is provided by nuclear fusion reaction using lunar soil as raw material, which is modeled after the soil nuclear power plant set up on earth.

In order to fully restore the atmosphere on earth to create the most suitable atmosphere for human survival, the camp will have gas extraction equipment, mainly oxygen production mechanism nitrogen machine. The device, which sits on the outside of the house, generates oxygen by decomposing the soil from the storage tank. Oxygen can also be made from green plants in greenhouses. The same goes for nitrogen machines. The air is filtered through layers of disinfection into the moon camp’s greenhouses, where it is further evolved by photosynthesis.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

The main purpose of the lunar Camp is to meet the needs of human scientific research on the moon. It adheres to the concept of “local resources” and maximizes the use of local resources to mine lunar soil for further exploration, understanding and exploration of the moon. Basic daily activities can also be carried out on the moon camp. The research center is used for data monitoring, and there is a large screen for contacting family members on Earth. The restaurant area has a fully automated food making machine, which facilitates people’s life and makes all the food basically self-sufficient and healthier. The rest area is simple and generous, where astronauts can relax and rest.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

On a nice day, astronauts can wash in the rest area on the top floor of the living quarters, and each room is simple and beautiful. The middle level of the living area is the dining area, which has all the functions of eating and drinking. When astronauts are hungry, they can choose a menu on the food machine according to their mood. Everything is automated. As for food sources, vegetables are picked fresh from greenhouses, water is filtered and transported by cold reservoirs, and meat can be synthesized by food machines equipped with plant-derived protein-simulated animal meat automatic and rapid synthesis system according to the different proportions of raw materials needed for each astronaut’s health. When the camp is up and running, astronauts can come to the mission control center to check data on various instruments or come to the lab to do lunar research. After a tiring day, astronauts can come to the basement of the living area, where there is a large enough space to meet the entertainment needs, where they can play VR games for physical relaxation, exercise through the treadmill, and there is also a bar and sofa for people to rest.
