Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

With the rapid development of science and technology, people began to explore other planets beyond the earth. The moon is the closest asteroid to the earth. Landing and living on the moon will be a big step for people on earth.

But the side effects of rapid technological development should not be ignored. Many of the things that humans produce in the course of life damage the Earth irreversibly, so we may need to move to another planet someday. Therefore, people should have a certain degree of understanding of the environment and even the way of life on outer planets. So we’ve chosen to raise awareness by sending videos of life on the moon back to Earth.

In addition,we model the harsh conditions on the moon that are not suitable for human life. The aim is to create a comfortable living environment for astronauts.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Established at the South Pole; Electricity for living on the moon, the operation of equipment and the lunar rover all consume a lot of energy. The sun shines at the South Pole for longer than anywhere else. So, living in the South Pole can get a lot of solar energy to make it easier for us to live on the moon.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

Considering the high cost of transportation, we chose to use lunar soil to build houses for astronauts to live in;Water is extracted from the lunar soil by equipment. Due to the limited water in the lunar soil and high water quality is not conducive to transportation,we built a water recycling system to provide enough drinking water for the astronauts and built a lunar rover to carry water and walk around. The rover’s main source of energy is solar energy; The facility was built to produce oxygen from the lunar soil through a chemical reaction. In addition to supporting the astronauts,we can also control the pressure in the moon camp with oxygen,to keep the pressure in the camp above and below the standard atmospheric pressure, to prevent the astronauts living under prolonged low pressure caused by muscle atrophy; Oxygen tanks and protective suits can make it easy for astronauts to move around outside on the moon at any time. Using lunar soil to build lunar camps; Heat shield tiles are used for insulation, insulate from the heat outside. Materials could be transported using reusable rocket technology developed by Mr Musk.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

Solar radiation: By building houses out of lunar soil to protect against radiation; Wear protective clothing when you go out to prevent the intense sunlight from directly shining on the astronauts’ skin and causing burns.

Without oxygen: Create a tunnel between the bases to form a confined space and bring oxygen to the camp.

Extreme temperature: The temperature difference on the surface of the moon is quite large, so we chose to put a heat shield tile on the outer layer of the building to insulate the extreme temperature of the lunar surface.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

Taking change 5 sample collection site as an example, the water content of lunar soil is about 120 PPM, which is equivalent to about 120 grams of water in one ton of lunar soil at the sampling site. So, we could build a water-making device on a lunar base station to extract water from the lunar soil, after treatment, it is collected to a certain extent and then put into a fixed tank to meet the water needs of the lunar base station.

Since the moon’s surface temperature is too extreme for plants to grow, we can solve the problem of temperature extremes by building vegetable greenhouses to secure food supplies for lunar camps.

The main energy requirement in the lunar camp is electricity, which we can solve by building solar panels. In order to meet the power supply needs of various equipment and life needs electricity.

Because the moon’s gravity is so small, there is no air on the moon’s surface to support normal breathing. We can provide oxygen by building oxygen facilities. Oxygen supply is divided into three aspects: external oxygen production provides most of the oxygen; Internal water decomposes to produce oxygen equipment for emergency needs; Use oxygen tanks outside to provide oxygen.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

The main purpose of establishing such camps is to test the difficulty of human survival on the moon, to explore the unknown “secrets” of the moon and to create better and more comfortable living conditions for astronauts. With the development of science and technology, human’s living environment has suffered more and more serious damage. For the future of humanity, scientists are searching for another place that could be habitable. After exploration, research, finally put the vision on the moon. Because it is rich in silicon and has low moonquakes and gravity and no atmospheric influence, it is suitable for scientific research and astronomical observation.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

After getting up in the morning, wash with water collected from the lunar soil or purified by the water circulation system. Then replace the oxygen tank. Go for a walk in the garden, enjoy the flowers and plants from home, exercise your body and stretch your waist. Head to the vegetable shed to prepare the day’s ingredients and start the day with a healthy breakfast. The first step is to ensure normal communication with the Earth and check the signal strength of the satellite and the performance of related equipment. Video of life on the moon is recorded and sent back to Earth so that more people can understand life on the moon. When the work is done. Have lunch with a partner and return to the residential area for a nap. In the afternoon, I had some ball games and arranged the exhibition hall with my companions at the base. At the same time, to have a chat, discuss with each other today’s life, so that the moon’s life is also more exciting. Then came to the vegetable shed to check whether the function of the water circulation system is good, can ensure the normal demand of vegetables and fruits. Then fertilize and turn the soil so that these crops can grow better. Clean the base after dinner, then return to the residential area for rest.
