Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon base is mainly used for scientific research and tourism as auxiliary functions. In this base, we will discuss the possibility of human life beyond earth, and explore the moon’s geographical environment, mineral resources, astronomical properties and other aspects. From the base, we will test the possibility of human life on earth, further promote the sustainable development of human civilization through the exploration of lunar resources, and further deepen our understanding of the universe through astronomical observations on the moon. The lunar base tourism project will greatly enhance the commercial value of the lunar base, attract more people to join the ranks of the exploration of the moon, and provide sufficient backup talent resources for the exploration of the universe.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We will establish a lunar base at Connecting Ridge on the South Pole, near Cabeus, where ice is expected to be mined. Building a lunar base here will provide us with light, helium-3 materials, mineral resources and water for the long-term construction of the base. The continuous illumination period of 316 days provided excellent conditions for the initial construction of the base.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

Inflatable capsules will be used to provide basic living support for astronauts in our initial lunar landing, and the lunar soil will be used as the main material for the construction of the base to avoid the impact of extreme environment. Considering the use of heavy aggregates or admixtures rich in hydrogen, boron and other elements with shielding effect, to realize the selection of concrete composition in the special lunar environment, and use lunar ice to process concrete with water mixing type. Concrete is extruded using 3D printing technology to create lunar structures.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

We will build both indoor and outdoor systems to ensure the safety of astronauts. The external buildings are shielded from cosmic radiation by radiation protection technology, and the internal life support system provides a constant temperature and humidity indoor environment. We built the Lunar Surface Emergency Rescue System, a jet-powered rescue vehicle that provides emergency rescue services to astronauts in danger. The early warning satellite, located in a synchronous lunar orbit, monitors for hazards such as meteorite impacts that could harm lunar bases.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

We will build both indoor and outdoor systems to ensure the safety of astronauts.

Initially, food will need to be carried from earth. With the construction of the base, we will grow crops in the green plant production area based on soilless culture (hydroponics and aeroponics) and microbial lunar soil conversion technology, with LED lights providing the most suitable lighting conditions for plant growth. At the same time, cultured meat provides adequate nutrition for astronauts. And equipped with a kitchen for astronauts to prepare food.

Based on the abundant sunlight conditions of the lunar base, the early phase of the camp will be mainly powered by solar power. The solar panels will work continuously under the right conditions of light, storing and transmitting electricity. In addition, as we continue to explore the moon, we will harvest helium-3. Nuclear fusion power generation using helium-3 element is the main energy supply method for future base construction, so as to guarantee the large amount of energy supply required by the base.

As the camp begins to build, plants will also provide a source of oxygen. We will use hydrogen reduction method to react with hydrogen, lunar soil and oxygen-containing minerals, and obtain air through microwave heating, molten salt electrolysis and further water electrolysis. This method has the characteristics of simple process, easy access to reaction equipment and low energy consumption.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

The main purpose of the lunar camp is to conduct scientific research and exploration on the moon, with tourism as an auxiliary function. Research on lunar astronomy, geographic environment and lunar travel projects will be carried out simultaneously. We also use the moon camp to explore the possibility of human survival in an extraterrestrial environment, and provide information for the idea of human interplanetary migration.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Sunny day, small air in the astronauts in his sleep and she suddenly heard a familiar voice: good morning, Sir, is now a Beijing time at six, 127 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature today 25 degrees Celsius, body feeling temperature of your body in good health, the moon camp functioning, the next will be broadcasting the news the earth for you… After breakfast, the astronauts first went to the equipment monitoring room to check on the condition of the camp, and then went through the circular corridor through the plant area to the laboratory for scientific tasks. At noon, the two astronauts had lunch under a tree in the plant area and discussed earth’s past. After a short lunch break, Xiao Hang went to the outside of the camp to check lunar water production, and then drove the rover to a crater to collect samples. Back to the base, xiao Hang and Xiao Xi enjoy dinner, came to the astronomical observatory to explain astronomical knowledge to tourists. At 10pm Beijing time, the lights in the camp went out as the two astronauts drifted off to sleep. At the moment, only the 3D-printing equipment on the moon’s outskirts is tirelessly sketching the camp’s future.
