Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our Lunar Camp program is divided into two phases: the first phase of lunar development and the later phase of stabilization.

Both stages contain the most basic and important pressurized accommodation and life support systems (water, food), and both include power and lunar rovers.

When at the development stage, considering the high cost of supplies from earth to the moon (a back and forth about 4 – $500 million), therefore, the development phases of the moon’s camp is relatively simple, only a habitation, pressure and life support system of water, food, etc. Can only be acquired through transport from earth, then the only solar power system of power system. The main task of this phase is to mine minerals and other materials such as water ice for the further development of the camp and to build the rest of the camp. This phase lasts about a year.

In the stable development period, the camp is mainly underground, with basic pressurized living quarters (dwellings) for living, entertainment areas for astronauts to rest, experimental areas for conducting experiments, and warehouses for storing materials. These areas are mainly 2-3 meters underground, which can effectively reduce the damage of cosmic radiation to human body and maintain the temperature of the cabin. There are growing areas for food and oxygen, solar areas for electricity, and treatment areas for minerals and water ice.The life of the camp was about 10 years. The main task at this stage is scientific research.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We’re going to build at 89 degrees on the moon’s South Pole. The reason is as follows.

(1) On Earth, day and night alternate roughly every 12 hours, while on the moon there are 15 days.In other words, on the moon, if the base is built on another side, there will be a considerable period of time when solar power cannot be charged.

(2) The polar region of the moon is under sunlight about 70% ~ 80% of the time, solar cells can provide sufficient power for the lunar base, the temperature difference in the polar region is small, and there are a lot of lunar seas in the polar region, which should be an ideal area for establishing lunar science research.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

The moon camp was built using mature 3D printing technology, which is already capable of constructing hundreds of square meters of buildings.Moon camp for the beginning stage of development, can use 3 d printing to print out a habitation, to carry from earth of the building blocks of living accommodation, due to the soil of the moon (the adhesive processing) is exquisite, can use this cover to the living accommodation, only it is not enough, also need glue used to glue soil, the most easy to use is the astronauts’ urine,Because urine contains urea, it could provide more glue for lunar soil.

The construction of stationary camp can be carried out in the lunar pit or the required space can be dug out by digging machines and then covered with lunar soil. The materials required are mainly reinforced concrete or the most direct metal structure formed by combining the minerals accumulated in the development period with the lunar soil.Silicon dioxide for aboveground growing areas and silicon for solar power systems are also minerals provided during development.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

During the development of the lunar camp, pressurized dwellings on the ground would be insulated against the moon’s large temperature differences and would solve the problem of loss of pressure. The lunar soil above the pressurized dwelling chamber (treated with adhesive) is also effective against cosmic radiation and small meteorites, as well as thermal insulation.

During the stable phase of lunar camp development, the 2 to 3 meters of lunar soil covering the underground settlement is a natural barrier. It can not only resist cosmic radiation and meteorites, but also keep warm.Shade panels and platinum outside the aboveground planting area also reflect cosmic radiation, preventing it from harming plants and astronauts.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

Before going to the moon, the astronauts had to carry some water to meet the water needs of the astronauts in the early days of camp construction.Later, because there is a lot of water ice at the moon’s South Pole, water can be mined and distilled through solid ice, which is the main source of water for astronauts.Second, the water in the ore can also be obtained by separating the gas produced during smelting.

Food comes with a year earlier, the astronauts can be determined by laboratory required for each crop conditions, and then built plantations in the moon base, the data in the plantation, according to the lab form suitable for crop growth environment conditions and temperature, at the same time in the area of the external, plus the mask and a layer of platinum, to reflect the strong ultraviolet light and super bright light, at the same time,Astronauts could also use their own manure as fertilizer, or create some organic fertilizer in the lab to feed crops.

Some areas of the moon’s South Pole get more than 100 days of light a year, which provides enough light to power astronauts by installing a lot of solar power on the outside of the lunar test base.Hydrogen produced by electrolysis of water can also be used as an energy source

In the early days, oxygen was carried from the Earth, and oxygen was mainly obtained by electrolysis of water. We can also use the oxygen generator developed by NASA experts (conversion ratio 1;5), either by isolating oxygen from lunar soil, or by mixing lunar topsoil with molten calcium chloride, heating the mixture to 960 degrees Celsius and electing an electric current.Oxygen produced by plants is also a source of oxygen.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

Building is the main scientific purpose camp the moon better astronomical observations and other scientific activities, build space stations on the moon for the earth, the moon all kinds of mineral resources, to explore the goals of the human to further provide a foothold, for planetary spacecraft flew to further the material even offer propellant.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

The alarm went off, and at seven o ‘clock in the morning, Roger, the Moon Camp commander, unpacked his sleeping bag, left the thermostat, and headed straight to the main cabin announcement room to announce the start of a new day at moon Camp.Everyone immediately get up to wash, they put toothpaste into the mouth, brush teeth with a miniature pressure gun to clean the mouth, after everyone finished washing, Roger battalion commander announced the morning meeting assigned tasks, at 7:30.”Team Water went to area W of the accommodation area to inspect water supply and cooperate with Team Ford in irrigation work; The Ford team went to the ground planting area to complete the tasks of farming and inventory of the warehouse;Team, please check the energy supply in the surface and underground energy areas.Yingwei heat team went to the ground to check oxygen supply, air quality and adjust the protective cover to ensure that the activity of the sun does not affect the operation of the camp;Edwin team please drive pipa drill car to mining scientific research materials outside the camp; Taikano team, please stand by to support other teams in technical difficulties.I hope you all have a good mission and can eat breakfast on the way. Let’s go!”As expected, the mission went off without a hitch. At this time, it is nearly 12 o ‘clock, taikano team to the warehouse to take out food to prepare food, the earth launched enough food, temporarily do not need to support. They started making delicious meals in the restaurant’s cooking area, which was a bit of a living habit because of the gravity capsule. After the meal, the camp members connected with the people back on Earth, shared new scientific findings, reported on the general situation, set new goals, and ended the conversation. At 3 o ‘clock, Roger announced to let all members of the daily physical exercise, exercise on the moon and the Earth is slightly different, they use rubber bands to achieve the same gravity as the Earth, to protect the function of the body. After the exercise, the members use the pressure gun to take a shower, and then enjoy dinner. In the evening, the members are free to play.Such as watching movies, playing games, keeping in touch with family and so on.Before going to bed, Roger assigned teams to camp inspection, no error, before going to sleep.
