Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The plan is mainly to study the habitability of the lunar environment for human beings, including studying the composition of elements on the moon and climate change, etc., on the basis of a sense of science and technology, as far as possible to let astronauts experience as warm as home, can alleviate the pressure of work, let the body and mind relax, maintain a better state. In addition, a large U-shaped magnet is used to build a magnetic field on the moon, which is constrained by the interaction of magnetic force and weightlessness to facilitate the astronauts’ food, clothing, shelter and transportation.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

The lunar base is built near nobil crater at the south pole of the moon, because the most accessible energy source in space is solar energy, and this is the most easily available place on the moon. And Nobill Crater is almost forever covered in shadows, and the possibility of ice is very high, which will facilitate direct research and access.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

Analogous to the magnetic field on the earth, a U-shaped magnet is used to make a local magnetic field. (Research shows that although there is no magnetic field on the moon, the magnetic material will not be demagnetized, and the magnetic field has not been found to have a significant impact on the reception of electromagnetic waves so far, but For the sake of safety, the radar will be installed outside the magnetic field.) The lunar soil is a good thermal insulation material, which plays an important role in maintaining the temperature stability of the main cabin. Using a 3D printer to print a bed and some parts for assembly, the building materials can use the lunar soil on the moon as much as possible to reduce transportation costs.Crypt type and semi-underground type are not suitable for planting cabins, because these two types need to be constructed with lunar surface materials, and it has been confirmed in the previous ‘Biosphere 2’ experiment that carbon dioxide can be absorbed by lunar surface materials. As a result, the carbon cycle of the ecosystem is destroyed, and plants cannot grow and reproduce normally. Therefore, rigid cabins and flexible cabins have become the first choice for planting sheds. It is understood that the rigid cabin structure can reflect space rays to a certain extent and has a longer service life.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

Using a semi-underground design, only the entrance and exit of the camp is above the lunar surface, and the other major parts are built underground, use lunar soil to effectively protecting against foreign meteorites and radiation from the moon. Two doors are set up at the entrance and exit of the base to reduce the lunar dust attached to the astronauts when they return from the trip as much as possible and reduce the possibility of disease. The second layer of active space provides a spinning bike that ensures effective daily movement of astronauts and reduces bone tissue damage caused by low gravity on the moon. Taking advantage of the peculiarities of the magnetic field, astronauts wear special shoes with a small amount of iron in the camp to ensure that the inconvenience caused by weightlessness is reduced in the camp.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

Mining mainly uses the way of space station transportation, the use of water purification and circulation, as far as possible to achieve the use of water many times, there are glaciers on the moon, after the placement can also be collected and applied to life.

In addition to bringing your own food, you can also get vegetables from the vegetables cultivation capsule to supplement the astronauts’ dietary fiber and vitamins.

Solar panels are used to convert light energy into electricity, minimizing the impact on the moon’s own environment.

The use of air circulation, connected with Vegetable cultivation room, carbon dioxide can be used for vegetables, vegetables through photosynthesis to produce oxygen, for human use, and also can use chemical reactions, with the human body exhaled carbon dioxide and sodium peroxide reaction to produce oxygen.Apart from that, the moon soil contains a large number of oxygen elements, can be decomposed to obtain oxygen.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

The main purpose is to study the feasibility of human habitation on the moon, on the basis of which to ensure the physical health and freedom of daily activities of researchers, increase the fun of living on the moon, and explore new settlements for future human beings to enter space.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

After the astronaut woke up from the rest compartment, after some scrubbing, put on the customized cabin spacesuit, took out the food from the refrigerator and put it into the microwave oven, after a while, put the hot food in the crisper box, moved to the magnetic table, enjoyed breakfast, after breakfast, the astronaut changed into a spacesuit and walked out of the main warehouse, check the solar power supply system, because electrical energy is the main energy used on the moon, after confirmation, drive the lunar rover to the moon to carry out exploration and ice mining work, and return after completion. The astronauts carried out strict surface cleaning before entering the main cabin and changed into the spacesuit in the cabin to avoid bringing moon dust into the main cabin. After that, the astronaut will go to the planting shed to check the situation of the plant planting room, the astronaut only needs to enter the planting room and look up at the data of the data feedback instrument, check whether the various adjustments are operating normally, check that there is no error, and then conduct some plant research here. Return to the main warehouse at noon to enjoy lunch, after lunch, they can sit on the couch and watch some news of the earth, or do some exercise, such as riding a spinning bike. After a brief rest at noon, he began the afternoon scientific research work, he entered a special scientific research warehouse to conduct a series of experiments, after a busy day, the astronaut dragged the tired body back to the main warehouse, turned on the satellite communication, met with the family, and reported safety. At this point, the day’s work is over, return to the rest room, wipe the body with a wet towel in the private space next to the sleep chamber, remove the exhaustion of the body, go to the sleep capsule next to the sleep capsule, the door of the sleep capsule will automatically open, and the astronaut will lie directly on the ergonomic bed and sleep comfortably, making sufficient preparations for the next day’s intense work.
