Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The base consists of four main parts: the Control Zone, the Healthcare Zone, the Energy Region and the Technologic Area. All of them are connected by many halls except for the Energy Region which is connected by wires to the Control Zone which will distribute the energy all along the base. Water will be collected by extractions of ice and with the sweat and urine of the crew.

The Control Zone is the place where all rooms in the whole the base are controlled. It has tables and chairs with lots of computers and screens that will receive the information that the other parts of the base provide, as the amount of energy that the Energy Region gives or even the temperature of the different parts of the base… It is made up of lunar soil with a semi spherical structure as the radiation cannot pass through this type of rock. Also, it is the main communication room with the Earth as it will have a satellite dish that will help to send the information to the Earth.

The main source of energy that the base use is the nuclear energy but there are also many solar photovoltaic panels that will help to obtain the necessary energy. The nuclear power station will be surrounded by a geodesic dome of concrete in case meteorites hit that area and, if there is a problem inside, the radiation won’t pass the concrete.

The Technologic Area is the place where the robots and the machines are fixed, programmed and stored. The SCR or “Sampling Collection Robots” are robots that are responsible for collecting samples from the lunar surface or even deeper. They have a combustion engine capable of drilling the lunar soil and a warehouse where these samples will be stored until they reach the Technologic Area and take them to a warehouse where they will be analysed by scientists.

The Healthcare Zone it’s made up of three different parts: the gym, the greenhouse and the infirmary. The gym has a double hexagonal pyramid shape made up of a very low friction coefficient material so that the sweat of the people will go down to the peak of the lower pyramid where there is a tube that is connected to the dehydration machines that will separate the water from the rest of the sweat. These machines are the same that will separate the water from the urine. The greenhouse has a geodesic dome shape and inside it there will be hydroponic crops and other crops like tomato, beetroot and peas that can be planted in the lunar soil and other plants like aloe vera that will produce huge amounts of oxygen.

The halls are made up of lunar soil, a wall where the wires will go through, the heat will be transmitted to control the temperature and another wall. They are divided into three equal sections which, between them, with a pressure sensor and doors that get shut if the pressure changes drastically. The wires that connect the Energy Core to the base, are hidden under the ground and are connected to the Control Zone.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

In order to be more efficient we would like to build it close to the poles in the hope of finding water and other resources.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

The main purpose will be scientific research but after thinking about it, we should evaluate the possibility to open it up to tourist or commercial purposes.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Astronauts will spend the day doing their tasks, investigation, analysis, production of food and water, reparation, construction, etc. During the afternoons they will make contact with their families and friends, and after exercising they could have their free time in order to enjoy music, books, etc.
