Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon camp will be for three or four people. Its task will be to refine the ways of obtaining oxygen and food outside the Earth, so that it will be easier for us to settle on Mars. It will also be able to test the ability and competence of future colonizers of other planets. Another task of our database will be to test innovative solutions, such as the use of a fusion reactor to power objects outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

2.1 Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

The camp would be built on the South Pole of the Moon, due to the large amount of light in this area, so we won’t have to worry about electricity. In the craters that occur in this area, there is ice that can be turned into water, thanks to which our astronauts will have enough to drink and we will have the main raw material for producing water. There are also all kinds of ores that can be mined, and ships most likely “starship” that will bring supplies will be able to take these ores to the Earth.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

The construction of the base will be divided into two parts. In the first, mining works will bore a hole in the ground and create a kind of a cave. Then they will set up the solar panels, the people’s containers and the necessary cables, and the pipes will be pulled inside the cave. When they do, they will extract ice from nearby craters and place it in containers. In the second phase, astronauts will arrive with inflated domes and when they set them up, all they have to do is flood the inside of the walls with water that will wait for them in the tanks. Phase 2 will not last longer than 4 hours.

2.3 The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them. (maximum 150 words)

Due to the meteorites that can hit and destroy our complex, the base will be built underground, so meteorites will not be able to do anything to it. Unfortunately, the solar panels will have to stay on the surface of the moon, but we’ll have a lot of parts to repair them if something happens to them. However, over time, the base will be equipped with a different power source. Another problem is radiation, to protect astronauts against it, water in the walls of the complex will stop cosmic radiation.

2.4 Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:

Water
Food
Power
Air

The water will be extracted from the bottom of the craters in the form of ice, and then placed in special containers in which the ice will be heated and become liquid.

The soil will be brought from the Earth where botanists will grow vegetables and fruits. And periodically, the meat of animals will be supplied from the ground

Electricity for the camp will be produced by solar panels placed around the camp, in the future it will be possible to build a nuclear reactor, and even if it is developed, it will be a fusion reactor.

Initially, oxygen will be imported from Earth. After that, some of the water that will be obtained from the dissolved ice will be electrolysed so that the moon camp will be able to produce oxygen itself.

2.5 Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp.

Our base would be scientific. Its goal was to prepare people for the further colonization of space and to check and test new technologies. However, in the future, when space travel will be generally available, our base will probably not function anymore and it will be possible to turn it into a museum.

3.1 Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

The morning for astronauts would start like on Earth, i.e. a morning toilet, etc., and a shared breakfast. Over the next hour, the crew will have time to prepare for their duties depending on their specialization. After this time, if the outside temperature is appropriate, someone from the crew will be able to collect the ice that the mining workers will extract, or make repairs if necessary. And those who stay in the complex will be able to take care of their duties, such as developing a hydro farm. “In the afternoon”, after the second meal, they will have time for themselves, that is, for example, talking to their relatives on Earth, chatting, playing chess. In the evening, each crew member will have to engage in physical exercises such as running on a treadmill or lifting dumbbells. After refreshing by the end of the day, they will have time for themselves, i.e. reading books or board games. We will be so nice that we will give the crew access to the Internet with Earthly resources so that Astronauts will be able to watch VOD movies. At the end of the day, after brushing your teeth, the crew members will find comfortable beds.
