FAQ’s – Moon Camp Challenge

  • What is the Moon Camp Challenge?

    The Moon Camp Challenge is an educational and inspirational school project that uses innovative learning technologies to challenge students to design their own Moon settlement with a 3D modelling tool.

  • What are the different entry levels?

    The Moon Camp Challenge is divided in three separate categories featuring different levels of complexity: Moon Camp Discovery (beginners), Moon Camp Explorers (intermediate) and Moon Camp Pioneers (advanced). This year you can also share your school project through the Moon Camp @School sharing platform.

  • What is Moon Camp @School?

    Moon Camp @School is an online sharing community for teachers and educators to showcase their student's school projects related with design or Moon exploration (such as 3D printed designs, hands-on experiments, classroom projects etc.). It is a non-competitive category and is open for submissions from 14 September 2022 to 18 April 2023.

  • What are the opening and closing dates of the Moon Camp?

    Participate in Moon Camp @School, Discovery, Explorers and Pioneers from 14 September 2022 to 18 April 2023.

  • How do I enter the Moon Camp Challenge?

    Moon Camp Discovery is open to individuals or teams, and you can be supported by a teacher, educator or parent. To join Moon Camp Explorers or Pioneers you must be part of a team of 2 to 6 students. For Moon Camp Explorers and Pioneers you have to be supported by a teacher/educator that has to create an account and submit your design and report using the online submission platform.

  • How many designs can I submit?

    There is no limit to the number of projects you can submit for Moon Camp Discovery. Teams who have submitted their project(s) to Moon Camp Discovery may also submit one project to either Moon Camp Explorers or Moon Camp Pioneers. Each participant can only be part of one team and can only submit one project to Moon Camp Explorers or Pioneers.

  • I am a teacher / educator, can I have multiple teams?

    Yes. The teacher/educator can support multiple teams.

  • Wer kann teilnehmen?

    Participation is open worldwide to teams of students aged up to 19 years old. Moon Camp Discovery is open to individuals or teams. For Moon Camp Explorers and Pioneers, teams must be comprised of a minimum of 2 up to a maximum of 6 students, and the projects must be submitted by a teacher/educator. Students attending a postsecondary/tertiary institution are not eligible to apply.

  • I do not live in Europe, can I still enter?

    Yes. The Moon Camp Challenge is a worldwide competition.

  • Does my entry need to be in English?

    No. Your project doesn't need to be in English, you may submit your project in any language. Please note that automatic translation of the projects will take place, so we do suggest to submit your project in English to avoid incorrect translations. Primary communication about the challenge will be in English.

  • Can I use any 3D design modelling tool?

    This depends on which category you enter. For Moon Camp Discovery and Explorers, the projects must be created using Tinkercad. For those entering Moon Camp Pioneers, you may use any 3D design modelling tool, however we support the use of Fusion 360 with resources and training, and will view projects in a 3D viewer optimised for this software.

  • How can I get access to 3D design modelling tools?

    Tinkercad and Fusion 360 are free to use for educational purposes, you can find more information on our Resources page, under the heading 3D Design.

  • How do I create an account in Tinkercad?

    Tinkercad is a free, easy-to-use web-based app for 3D design. Find out more information here: www.mooncampchallenge.org/tinkercad

  • How do I create an account in Fusion 360?

  • How do I share a public link with Tinkercad?

    To submit your Moon Camp Discovery and Explorers projects, you need to share a public link with Tinkercad. Find out more here: www.mooncampchallenge.org/how-to-share-a-public-link-with-tinkercad/

  • Will I get an email acknowledgement that my entry has been received?

    Yes, you will receive an e-mail confirming that your entry has been received.

  • Where can I find more information about the Moon?

    General information about the Moon can be found in the Resources section of this webpage, including animations, infographics, tutorials, webinars and classroom resources.

  • How will the winners be chosen?

    Moon Camp Discovery is a non-competitive mission. All individuals/teams that submit an entry that complies with the guidelines will be granted a participation certificate. For the Moon Camp Explorers and Moon Camp Pioneers a jury composed of ESA, Airbus Foundation and Autodesk experts will select the finalist teams and winners based on the criteria defined in the guidelines.

  • Where will my design be displayed?

    All the designs will be displayed on the Moon Camp online platform.

  • What are the Moon Camp prizes?

    All teams will receive a participation certificate. The winning teams of Moon Camp Explorers and Moon Camp Pioneers will receive a 3D printer and the opportunity to participate in a live webinar with an ESA astronaut.

  • When will the winners be announced?

    The winners of Moon Camp Explorers and Moon Camp Pioneers will be announced in June 2023.

  • Will the winners be announced on ESA and Airbus Foundation channels?

    The winning teams will be announced on the ESA and Airbus Foundation media channels. They will also be contacted directly using the email address provided at submission.

  • If I have a problem with my entry, or a question about the competition, whom should I contact?

  • Can I withdraw my submission?

    Your Moon Camp @School and Discovery projects can not be withdrawn after submission. Your Moon Camp Explorers or Pioneers project can be edited or deleted up to the deadline. After the deadline, the project can not be withdrawn. If you would like to request the deletion of a published project please contact us via email: moon.camp@esa.int.
