Project description

“Tapon y Nieve” is designed to deliver payloads and crew safely to the lunar surface under extreme thermal conditions. It can land in permanently shaded craters near the Moon’s south pole, or in equatorial regions exposed to constant sunlight.

The lander has a heat-shielded descent stage and descent thrusters that can operate at very high or low temperatures. An insulated transfer tunnel and airlock maintain pressure and thermal control during egress and ingress.

The habitat module has special coatings, insulations and active heating/cooling systems to regulate temperature despite the environment. Oxygen, water and energy production equipment can still function properly even under thermal extremes. Environment suits are rated for long-duration survival in hot or cold environments.

Key systems have component redundancies and backups to ensure safety. Power is provided by solar panels in equatorial regions or solar-thermal convertors in polar regions. Emergency backup power uses hypergolic batteries.
