Moon Camp Explorers 2022 – 2023 Project Gallery

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangers of space and describe the living and working facilities in their Moon Camp.

1.1 – Project Description

Our Moon Camp will host four astronauts, who will be accommodated in two living modules with two beds each. In the Moon Camp there will be a gym, where they can keep fit, a control center to monitor the two Rovers that we have made available, a laboratory for experimenting with lunar soil, a landing zone, solar panels to produce energy and a greenhouse for the production of food and spirulina

1.2 – Why do your astronaut want to go to the Moon and build a Moon Camp?

Our astronauts want to go to the moon to build human settlements, creating laboratories, research centers, structures for mineral extraction, telescopes for studying the stars and the various planets. This base will also be used in the future, to get to Mars.

2.1.a – Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Our Moon Camp will be built inside a lunar crater at the South Pole of the Moon.

2.2.b – Why did you choose this location?

This place will be more protected from possible meteor showers and harmful sun rays.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe how you can use the Moon’s natural resources, and which materials you would need to bring from Earth.

A 3D printer will be essential for the initial stages and will allow the creation of the first constructions. The robots will assemble the various modules using the pieces created by the printer. The first construction will be the greenhouse, containing the spirulina that allows the astronauts to breathe during the construction of the base.

The natural resources of the Moon will be used to produce the material for construction and the natural resources will also be used for electronic components and for the hardest parts of the structures. In the beginning, plastic transported from Earth will be used for the printer to build the first structures.

3.1 – How does your Moon Camp protect and provide shelter to your astronauts against the Moon’s harsh environment.

Our Moon Camp will have a natural defense created by the crater where the base will be established, this will protect it from solar radiation and from meteorites. Later on a defense system will be installed using missile launchers.

3.2 – On the Moon, resources are very scarce, but during long Moon missions, astronauts cannot rely on resupply missions from the Earth. Explain how your Moon Camp will provide astronauts with sustainable access to basic needs like water, food, air and power.

From the various researches done by the satellites sent to the Moon, it was discovered that frozen water can be found  at the South Pole, from there we will extract it to understand if it is drinkable water. Our Moon Camp will produce vegetables such as potatoes  inside the greenhouses. Here will also grow spirulina, an algae that produces oxygen through carbon dioxide. Solar panels will be built outside our base to produce energy.

4.1 – What would you include in your astronaut training programme, to help prepare the astronauts for a Moon mission?

At the beginning, the most suitable from a physical and mental point of view will be chosen among the volunteers, the training will be heavy and continuous, it will bring stress, so as to get them used to the difficult environments of the Moon. The training will be carried out in lunar-like environments. Astronauts will undergo a program called Caves. For a week they will enter very deep caves, where there is no light to conduct scientific experiments.

There will also be parabolic flights which are the only way to subject astronauts to micro-gravity conditions on Earth.
