Moon Camp Explorers 2022 – 2023 Project Gallery

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangers of space and describe the living and working facilities in their Moon Camp.

1.1 – Project Description

First, we have decided that our project will be in the lava tube of the poles because there is a better temperature. Then, the moon camp will be made from the elements of the Moon. In effect, we want to make furniture with a printer in 3D. After that, our moon camp will consist of 3 floors : the first floor will be on the surface, the underground will be the house of the  astronauts and the tunnels will be for safety. In the house, there will be no stairs because of the gravity.  Also, on the surface we want to place gutters to retrieve meteorites elements (for the construction of the house). On the first floor, we want to make a shape of pyramid. It will be made of polyethylen to protect us of the meteorites.  After that, we want to place our cultivations inside the pyramid and in the underground because some plants need more light than others. Inside the pyramid, there will be solar panels. This will serve to provide artificial light for the house.

1.2 – Why do your astronaut want to go to the Moon and build a Moon Camp?

The astronauts  want  to go to the Moon and do many things :

– Live a historical moment, mark the spirits and history of space race.

– Be less far of the planet Mars, to continue the space exploration.

– The astronauts want to build a Moon camp to prove that it is possible to survive on a celestial object. All space experiences have had consequences on our environment, medical researches and scientific progress.

– It is in the human nature to always want to explore and understand the whole world.

2.1.a – Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Lunar lava tubes

2.2.b – Why did you choose this location?

To build our camp on the moon we chose to create it in the lava tubes of the moon and on the poles. We chose the lava tubes because the average temperature is 20°C and we are protected from the sun. The poles have a better temperature than other places, the sun doesn’t stop shining: that’s why we chose the poles.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe how you can use the Moon’s natural resources, and which materials you would need to bring from Earth.

We will build a house with four levels ( on, 3 underground, tunnels).

On the moon, we will build a pyramid in polyethylen of 20 cm. On the pyramid it will be necessary to set up a meteorite gutter in polyethylen of 20cm.  Underground, the pyramid will  have 4 levels which should be in 3D elements for the walls and floor. They will be built directly on the moon. The 3 levels will be connected with ladders and ropes. All of the construction will be airtight. Under the three levels, there will be security tunnels for emergency.

3.1 – How does your Moon Camp protect and provide shelter to your astronauts against the Moon’s harsh environment.

Our Moon camp protects the astronauts thanks to a pyramid. The pyramid is 20cm thick. The base is underground because when the meteorites fall and hit the base, then the food , energy and researches will be protected.

On the pyramid, there are plants. The plants can be used as food or medicine.

The astronauts can exit from the base of the pyramid or below the base through tunnels and elevators.

3.2 – On the Moon, resources are very scarce, but during long Moon missions, astronauts cannot rely on resupply missions from the Earth. Explain how your Moon Camp will provide astronauts with sustainable access to basic needs like water, food, air and power.

Water :  Water will be transported in very large quantity from the Earth. This water will be stored in the moon camp. We thought about installing a machine like ECLSS in the ISS. This machine will recycle the astronauts’ urine into water but it will not be  exactly like the ECLSS because it uses a lot of power.

Food : At the beginning of the mission, the totality of the food will be provided from the Earth. 2-3 months later the production of the vegetables will start. The production will be in the underground of the moon and produced by light. The other food will be in cans of food.

Power : A little part of the power will be provided from the Earth. Another part will be produced by solar panels. The solar panels will be in the poles because there is always sunshine. They will be protected from meteorites by the triangle dome.

Air : Air will be provided from the Earth. A little part of the air will be recycled with ECLSS like in the ISS. The astronauts will use oxygen masks to go outside of the camp. The camp will be regularly supplied in air.

Protection : We will use a triangle dome with 20 centimeters of polyethylene to protect the camp from meteorites.

4.1 – What would you include in your astronaut training programme, to help prepare the astronauts for a Moon mission?

After the scientific aspect, the astronauts’ training programme will contain a psychological aspect to help them when they are isolated. Then they need a physical aspect because in zero gravity, the astronauts’ muscles weaken as well as their bones. They must practise sport on the Earth and have a very good physical condition. The space shuttle must be protected from radiation and must be smaller.
